lifter noise ??

Sounds like exhaust maifold leak to me. I'd check that before getting into the expensive stuff.

An exhaust manifold leak wont go away when you rev it. I've already ruled that one out.

Please excuse my newbieness, but how would i test the oil pressure or what is the gauge called i need? (oil pressure gauge?lol) These guys have been trying to pin point it for the last couple days, but can't get the noise to last more than a couple minutes if at all. They are tending toward a chain issue but don't understand why it only makes any noise except during idle. The recommendation was to just drive it until it makes noise more consistently to be able to figure it out. I asked about the oil pressure theory and they seemed skeptical and said there would be an oil light, whether that's true or not. Id like to check it myself though. Please let me know how i do that. Also, if the the chain ends up flying off and I need a new engine, is there any difference between a 4.0 in a 2wd ranger and a 4wd one? I've found a few engines with 35k for 700 bucks not too far out of 03 rangers.

Just buy a mechanical oil pressure gauge, hook it up and see how it fluctuates as the truck gets up to operating temp. The oil light wont come on unless there is less than 8 psi or soo of pressure. IMO, anything under 20psi at idle is insufficient and can be harmful.

if i have that problem with the fluctuating oil pressure, what would be at fault or what to fix? The oil pump?

Well....it could be numerous things. Excessive bearing clearances can lower pressure, a worn oil pump, etc.. Give us some figures as far as the pressure and we can give you an idea of if its your problem.

Bumping this back to the top.

I have on 2004 that has the EXACT issue. Started at about 150k with an oil and filter change. Slight tick at idle but the noise just gets faster when the RPMs come up. Coming from drivers side, up front

I just changed both tensioners(simple job) but it did Absolutely nothing.

Tonight I pulled the valve cover. Guide looks fine and both halves look to be intact. Hooked everything back up to start the engine and fired it up. I use a long prybar as my stethoscope. Only noise I hear is from the 1st "bearing"behind the timing gear. I checked the bolts and they are tight.

I am at a loss as to what it could be

Well I bought 6 new lash adjusters(lifters), figuring one was not pumping up.

As I was changing them out, the last one to be exact. As i rotated the cam/engine to get the front rocker out, I saw the roller was worn to S H I T. Rotated the cam more and the lobe is destroyed.

Guess I found my tick

Anyone else ever hear of such a thing?

Update:

I got a new cam and 6 new roller rockers.
Bought the OTC 6488 SOHC timing set.

Pretty straight forward.

Pull both valve covers.
Put engine in TDC and put on crank shaft tool to hold it there.

Then put cam tool on drivers side in the back of the cam to hold it.

Then put tool on cam gear at front of divers side cam.

Once the tools are on put in timing tensioner.

Tighten cam gear.

Repeat on other side

Wow! I bet this is more common than bad tensioners. OK, maybe not.
Probably more often the cause than we think. I reckon the valve covers are coming off...
