Hey, I have a 88 bronco II, with 328 000 km on it. Was wondering if anyone knows the average lifespan for the limited slip?
Is there any way to service one back into working order?

Thanks.

dont know the lifespan but i beleive the bII uses a clutch type ls and yes it is rebuildable

lsd can last a long long time if not abused, on the other hand you can destroy one in five minutes or less without trying too hard. You can get rebuild kits for them that include disks, clutches and shims. they're not difficult to rebuild and it does not require any special tools to do the job. It does take a bit of time though.

Anyone got a price for a rebuild kit?

Would getting the disks, clutches and shims out of a wrecker be worth the time/effort?

Thanks.

Absolutely not. If you are going to go through the trouble of doing it put new parts in, don't do it twice to save a few dollars and possibly end up having to do it a third time.

Putting used clutches in your LSD is the equivalent of putting a used clutch in your vehicle.

+1 - Not a recommended way of doing it. I take it you have a 7.5?

Yupp. Two of 'em, in fact. lol
One of them has 4.10 and a LS, but thats in a broken truck (no idea the actual condition of the ls)
Other is 3.73 open, on the 'new' truck I bought...

I'm not sure if you're interested, but American Muscle has a brand new Ford Racing unit for 200 bucks shipped. The price is good until 1/31/11. I'm 99.9% sure this thing will work in a Ranger too (it's listed as being for a Mustang).

The T-Lok in my Mustang has 185,000ish miles of abuse, and still lays two patches! :icon_thumby:

Not particularly, but thanks.
Can't say I have interest in spending $200 to upgrade an axle I know is less-than-strong... If the LS in the 4.10 geared axle is shot, maybe I'll just weld those bitches up...

I had my limited slip just decide to stay locked. She ate up the spider gears. Barely made it home. Great in a straight line, turns were pretty bad... no warning, or signs, no even abuse. about 150xxx miles on it.

That is really rare to see. It does happen, but it's very rare. I suspect that there may have been a pre-existing fault in the spiders before they grenaded. The extra stress from the limited slip just pushed them over the edge.

Oh yeah man, I would love to agree with you. I thought the very same. One very cold night I was driving home from work, and i made a turn out of a parking lot and i thought someone took my dif cover off, put some wrenches in there, and reinstalled with fluid. It was binding and jerking, but nothing like before i made the 20 miles home. in a straight line everything was fine. The next day I went out and the thing barely made it around my yard, it was really, really bad. Opened it up, and sure enough, full of fluid, and about 4 tablespoons of spider gear added to the oil.
