Just wondering how many other people have a odd pet hanging out in their house. Over my lifetime I have had snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, and geckos. Those are everything from the common tree frogs and green anoles, to a bearded dragon and alligator gecko. At one point in time I had about 7 frogs, two toads, 5 lizards, a gecko, the beardy, and a tarantula living in my house. Never had a digital camera for those though.
Anyway, here's my 8 year old tarantula. I got her for my 10th birthday and I'm almost nineteen. Shes definitely female, since if she wasn't she would be half the size and probably dead by now. Males have a lifespan of approximately 5 years while females can live to 20.
And here's my current set up. I bought the tank (20 gallon long) for about 36 dollars new, I had to get the wood grain style because the only other black one in that size was about 60 dollars. The bark hut on the right my father made 7 years ago while he was splitting wood. He figured it would be cool for my tarantula and she's used it ever since. I tried to split the tank up with sand and bark to see what she prefers, she uses the sand sometimes when she's exploring at night but mostly she keeps to the bark pieces. When I clean her space out I'll probably leave it all bark. The skull is actually a fish tank ornament that I carved out so she could fit inside. She used to be in a smaller tank, 8 or 9 gallon, but she seemed cramped in there and mostly hung out in one side, or tried to escape. So far she hasn't gotten herself stuck on the top of this one, since she has so much room to travel around in.
Oh, and here's one of the top. If you can, get one of these. They work wonders. Just be sure to get the locking kind. It's definitely less troublesome than lifting the top up and having to move both her lights.
