My 88 2.3 just went extremely lean (at least that's what my gauge is indicating). What are some things to look for/ replace/ troubleshoot? Also it doesn't seem to be running any different.

How are you getting the information that your engine is running lean? If you have an aftermarket fuel/air gauge, perhaps the wiring from your O2 sensor to the gauge has failed, or the gauge itself. If you have a second O2 sensor exclusively for driving that gauge, then perhaps that sensor has failed.

It sounds like the factory O2 sensor is still providing correct information to the EEC, and that the EEC is driving the fuel injectors correctly.

We will likely need more information to help you much further. Have you tried reading the error codes from the engine computer?

It is an aftermarket narrow band gauge hooked up to the factory o2 sensor. The wiring for it looks okay. Perhaps the gauge has gone bad. I have check for vacuum leaks and I can't find any. I just replaced the low pressure fuel pump yesterday. The o2 sensor is no more than 2 months old.

Pulled the codes. Got a 53 tps is too high. What does it mean by this? Too high of voltage? Needs to be adjusted? Replaced?

It's saying that the tps is putting out too much voltage. IE it's sending a signal way too strong for what the computer can use.

Check the sensor wiring to make sure that it's getting the correct voltage on the supply side, and check the sensor that it's got the correct resistance range in it, and maybe even use jumpers or a wire probe if you have one to check that the sensor is in fact sending too many volts relative to the throttle position.

The book should say the normal operating range of volts in, resistance, and volts out.

Does anyone know what those voltage ranges are? I don't have a book. And I'm assuming I would test this by getting a volt reading at no throttle, part throttle and WO throttle?

I checked my tps. It was functioning properly, it just needed to be adjusted just a little. The only other thing I can think it might be is bad gas. I gassed up at a chain store that has been know to have sub par quality gas and the issue started shortly after using said gas. I'm gonna run the tank out and fill up with the usual stuff and check back in then.

Find a book, purchase it. Keep it in the truck.

Would a regular ol' Chilton's/haynes suffice? Or should I find something better? I do have a wiring schematic book I keep in there (even though I can't read it worth a damn haha).

Cool. I put some good gas back in her and she's still running a hair lean but she's pretty well back to normal.

Lean condition just went full blown. Engine wont rev higher than 2500 rpms and it sounds like its detonating. Checked the fuel pressure yesterday and it was 32psi raised to 40 with throttle (but it was running fine yesterday) put in a new o2 sensor yesterday. Running good gas in it. What sensors should I check? Tps is fine. Maybe the high pressure pump?

How old is the fuel filter.? Also I would be checking for vacuum leaks. The main pump is working or the engine wouldnt run. good hunting. Diagnosing the symptoms is cheaper than replacing stuff until the problem goes away.

Fuel filter isn't too old? Maybe 8 months give or take. I haven't found any vacuum leaks but I'll keep looking. Checked the fuel pressure again and its def not the issue.

It sounds to me like you have MAJOR vacuum leak. Like the line to the brake booster is off kinda major.

If it isn't a vacuum leak then it almost has to be either the computer is limiting fuel for some reason, or an injector is clogged.

With symptoms that serious it shouldn't be hard to find.

What's the full list of codes from the ECU?
