leak at connection, newly installed pump

I just put a new steering pump in my truck. I am having problems with a leak where the high pressure line connects to the pump. The hose had a white plastic ring, and I installed the new one that came with the pump. The leak is around the metal end of the steering hose where it goes inside of the brass fitting.

Even with the fitting tight, it still leaks. And, the hose is sort of loose inside of the fitting.

Has something inside the fitting worn out? Do I need to buy a new hose? Or, can I put some sort of goop in there? The white plastic ring seemed pretty useless.

Take the white plastic ring out.

It didn't go into the fitting, it went over the threads on the end of the hose. It squished down to nothing. But, I did take it off and still had the same leak.

I decided to replace the hose, thinking the the compression fitting is shot.


(edit) I'm going to to do it in the morning. It's now 9:30pm in Colorado.


The pump says to torque the fitting to 20 pounds. I probably did 60. 20 has to be a misprint. Anybody know what I should tighten the fitting on the new hose to?
