Language pet peeves- list yours too

Where I work...some of you know and some don't

they need to "axe" (ask) me a question.....are you going to hack me up?

or I need to go to the "liberry" (library)......what flavor is that?

Here's one I hear a lot: "he picked a burger and ate it". Was he choosing between Wendy's and McDonald's, or what?

I don't have any language peeves. Write what you want, spell it wrong, use all caps, use slang, I'll get what your saying. Who the fuuck cares, just get your idea out there. :icon_thumby:

dude, i worked at an autozone that was located right next to the ghetto in raleigh...i know exactly what you're talking about.

i take glass and towing claims for an insurance company now. people call and say they have a crack in their windshield that has "spreaded". it's unfortunate

The "axe a question" or "axed me about it" gets me; I hear it all the time at work. Also, it's "jewelry", not "joolery".

A dryer makes your clothes drier.

My ex used to add an "R" to wash.....every week, she'd "warsh" the clothes.

"What color blue is that?" It's blue......do you mean what shade of blue?

"Seen" vs "Scene"....homonyms seem to be the downfall of so many. (My favorite is "isle" vs "aisle".)

"Where are you at?" No, it's "Where are you?" Then I'll tell you where I am, should I decide to answer.

Maybe it's my long love of reading that has helped me. I always got high marks in spelling. Hated doing grammar in English, but I think some of it soaked in.

There should be two spaces after punctuation that ends a sentence. Only one space after punctuation within a sentence.

My biggest.....and probably most annoying fault.....is the use of periods in my paragraph structure. (Yeah, these.................) I'm mainly conveying a pause, without the use of a comma.

there aint nothin that bothers me more than someone who will right a hole paragraph and not use a cingle peace of punctuation for proper sturcture i dont thik that that is good edumacation on bepart of our schols it also buggs me shen people cant spell a single word write.
:icon_rofl:

One thing other thing that is annoying is when a person ends a sentence with a period and doesn't do a space before the next sentence.Kind of like this.

Well that can kinda work except... Language has it's rules, exactly so that ideas CAN be clearly communicated. When you don't follow them, meanings change and your idea or point isn't clearly communicated at all.

See my post on the previous page for my point.

I agree. Which is why my original question was; when the hell did ima become a word? For shits and giggles, lets just say that ima IS a word. It would actually need to be I'm'a, wouldn't it?

Ah, it's this thread again. My brain is going to hurt once again. I will need something to drink to make me forget or at least make me stupid. :icon_twisted:

FYI: I have a friend at work that has a lot of pet peeves for the English language. So I am nearly corrected on something that I say, every day.

no, I'm'a would be saying 'I am a'. Ima just makes no fu*cking sense

I assumed "Ima" meant "I am gonna" when I made that comment. Was I wrong? The apostrophe ( ' ) is supposed to place of missing letters.

Whatever the hell it means, I hope it dies soon. :D I agree, it makes no sense to me either. Pretty soon we'll have people making sentences that consist of 5 letters.

Unfortunately, "ima" is never going to die. I heard that one over 8 years ago form one of the wanna be "thugs" at work. If its still around this long, its not going anywhere.

We already do:
