I'm replacing the rear brake system on my Ranger. This is taking me a while on account of not really knowing what I'm doing and having a job. Therefore, for the past week, my truck has been on blocks with the wheels off in front of my apartment building.

Today I get a call from the Landlord informing me it is a lease violation to leave a car like that. said something to the effect of "It could fall and crush a kid or something" Ok, so that doesn't make sense to me but I'll cede the point. It's a legitimate enough concern for me; I can imagine landlords have to deal with an incredible amount of insurance nightmares. I tell him from now on I'll put the wheels on when I'm done working on it for the day. But no. He goes on to tell me that, in fact, it is a lease violation do do any automotive work whatsoever on his property. He reserves the right to evict me for changing my oil in his parking lot. Well huh...

At this point his argument became one of asthetics. He can't let me jack a car because then he'd have to allow everyone to do that and, this is a direct quote, "Can you imagine how the building would look with everyone doing that?"

Of course I can imagine that scene. I call it my brother's house. But the take home message is that its just kind of trashy to work on cars. It's trashy to not have enough money to pay someone to figure out your troubles for you. It's trashy to leave a car on blocks. And it's trashiest of all to do things for yourself.

Sorry if this post is misplaced. Just needed to rant. anyone else been told they're not allowed to work on their truck?

than work on the truck in the street because he has no rights in the public street and check out the lease to see if is pulling your leg!!!! There are always away around things don't give up...

Yeah, pull out your lease and see if it is specifically stated in the lease that he can evict you for that, if its not in the lease or the building rules, you are allowed to do the work until he puts it in writing on a document that you sign. If he hasn't done that and he evicts you its breaking contract and you can sue him.

Doom is also right though. If you go up the street away from his property and you don't rent from the person that owns the lot you are working in front of, neither of them can do anything to you. I'm not supposed to do any work where I live, but I know people in the company and they know I'm a trained professional, so I'm allowed to do some stuff, as long as the vehicle is not left unattended by me while any wheel is off.

dont check your lease, go tell your LL to get your lease and point out where it says that and then verify your sig to make sure it's actually yours.

as for myself, during college i had an awful time with apartment complexes i lived in (3 i think). i graduated 2 years ago and there is still one real estate company trying to get $$$ from me that they say i owe them.

its makes sence though, and your assumption is most deffantly correct (in my oppinion). i get complaints from people all the time and code enforcement for working on the truck outside the garage.

although i dont blame the guy, when my brother got his first appartment he decided to change the oil in the lot. (he has a 94 with the 4cyl.) little did he know the auto part guy gave him the wrong filter, and sure enough he put like 6q. of oil in it which was way to much, so he started it up and not only did oil go into the engine and smoked the lot up, but he also lost most all the oil on the ground!!!! most retarded story every, but proves the guys point lol
maybe the point of that story is not everyone is cut out for auto work and landlords might see this and fear this kind of accdent! lol. the guys lot was oil stained for a whole seaison.

had this same problem at my buddies apt fuel pump went out and the land lord told us we couldnt work on it in the parking lot... i dont know your situation but luckily the land lord didnt live nearby so at 7 or 8 we got 2 cases of beer 1/5 of wild turkey 3 hours later it was runnin he couldnt prove anything

move to the country the cows dont care what you do to your truck lol

We can't all be so lucky. I'm moving out there one of these days, but for now I'm stuck in the city.:annoyed:

Thats why I moved to a covenant controlled neighborhood. I hate it when people work on their vehicles in the driveway. But I also understand a guy has got to get things fixed, but I do have kids and can just picture a vehicle falling on one of em.

my landlord is kind of nice in that way. i am allowed to work on my truck as long as no fluids are involved.

i like how he said "can you imagen if i let everyone do this" as if as soon as he lets this slide, everyone in the apartments are going to stop going to there mechanic and start rebuilding there engines out in the parking lot. lol
