Landlords (or why I hate the city life)

I can understand an environmental concern, because should you spill oil the "soil" is now contaminated and must be dug up and sent for treatment.

i know the spilling of fluids especially in areas like the one i live in the nj pinelands, have a very high water table, and this shit shoots right through the soil to the water out here horrible. that being said i usually do all my work on a concrete pad outside my house, and never spill fluids, technically township rules say we are not allowed to work on cars outside of the garage, but thats a bullshit rule in its self when u OWN the property

I wouldn't want people working on cars if I owned the complex. It does look bad. It does leave stains on the concrete no matter how careful you are. In sales, only the perception counts.

I know sometimes you gotta live where you gotta live. I've done the apartment thing. There is a reason I moved out into the boonies where I can step out back, naked, and throw dynamite at racoons and woodpeckers.

all i got out here are the feral cats and the damn annoying chicken that likes to shit and sleep in our garage whenever it can, ****er comes a runnin if u have to step out back to take a piss while workin on something

btw how ya been Will lol, been a while since i been on

yeah

yeah, it's in the lease alright. And don't get me wrong, I understand the man has a business to run. And it's very clearly my own fault for not noticing that part of the lease I signed. It's just that this whole incident comes at a time when I'm missing the kind of place I grew up. One of those cow-filled raccoon-dynamiting backyard-pissing kind of places.

Also, the man who told me all this is not the owner. I guess he's the super. Or manager. Anyway he seemed to really be trying to throw me a bone. He said we all must follow the rules but added that if anyone were to brake a rule on the weekend there would be no one around to notice. He all but winked and nudged as he said this.

And the truck just has to be worked on. So I guess I'll just work on weekends, the only time of week I can anyway, and do a particularly good job cleaning up. So all my indignation aside, things really are not so bad. And yes, I'll move to the country when I can. It'll be a few years though and I know I'd do best to not burn bridges in the meantime.

i think the reguards for contanimants on the lot are kinda subjective anyway when you have people like my brother spill allot of oil sure its a problem,
but also you have to take into consideration for the people who neglect there cars, cars leak fluids, its just the way it works, and if a lot of anykind has been there long enough its bound to be soiled with oils of all sorts.

contracts are a good thing that people neglect and could be put to good use and possibly avert all this nonsence, you want to work on your car? make it safe and make sure it cant crush a kid when you leave it alone or no animal can lick up the pool of coolent by diluting it to an acceptibal concentration.

personally i think this world will be a giant ball of flaming shit in probably a very short period of time, so my ethics arnt that conservitive. **** em all. live your life and fix your truck.

this guys case is a prime example of an ideology to which is a contributer to why we have so many problems in our country and why its headed to shit. people want to push there ethics on everyone else and if they anrt they need to be subjectivly thrown or inserted at us who dont accecpt them until an we exibit an oppressed life.

if i wanted to live with some one shooting there way of life down my throat like that i could and probably should have burned my self in an oven along time ago.

Most places I've lived as an adult had a similar policy to auto repairs on the property. The last apartment complex I lived in prohibited repairs on the property AND prohibited inoperative vehicles from being parked on the property. Made no sense, but it was clearly written in the contract.

I feel like most apartments ban working on you vehicle in the lot. I know mine does, but I do subtle things like rewinding my winch cable and stuff without complaints. I'm surprised they let me park my POS Exploder on their property next to the people with new JKs and stuff! It'd be nice if I had an apartment that let you do this kinda stuff though. I felt iffy cleaning out the inside of my Jeep one nice day on our property. We're also banned from parking motorcycles on the property.

Time to move dude, but before you move out of state, get some pets and let the apartment be a kennel for a month....:icon_twisted:

...and who cares about no pets in your contract!

I never understood this "don't dump oil" stuff, especially in the oilpatch where salt brine is sprayed down lease roads....

When I lived in Barrie, ON there was a by-law that forbade working on a vehicle in your own driveway...really...had to be in the garage...

And you could not park a vehicle that was not plated on your own property...$105 fine for doing so...and the city could tow it away at your expense if you did not heed their warning...

I can understand the landlord only if it is a bylaw and/or specified in your lease...get it checked...

Luckily, my landlord is my grandmother. :yahoo:
I have an unplated '87 parts truck in the driveway, my '92 wheeler in the garage with a woodstove, and my '88 DD parked in front of the garage. All I ever get is "Make sure you dump all your oil in pails and get it recycled." But there are fences/cedar hedges surrounding the entire driveway anyway, so no one can see in, and it doesn't look like a huge mess. I feel ya though, that's got to be terrible having next to no place to work on a truck.

I am not supposed to work on vehicles at my house but I usually do anyway. The only time I had anyone say something was when I did the front half of my lift, and had the front end of my pickup laying on the ground for a few days. The landlord just said hurry up with it...they were pretty cool about the whole deal.

I will not ever live somewhere that prohibits me from working on stuff and actually enforces it. I grew up with cars and parts all over the yard and everyone had a private junkyard back behind the hill in the trees. I have no problem with my neighbors doing it.

we all have to respect each other the guy who does not work on his stuff needs to step back and think maybe my neighbor cant afford to have someone work on his truck and the guy who is working on his truck needs to think of his neighbor and not make a junk yard in his driveway or yard because he maybe hurting and trying to get a new loan for his house and the bank people come look and see a junk yard next door and turn his loan down because of it we need to think more about each other and quit being so selfish and have some enphathy for each other next time you see your neighbor offer a hand not a complaint

first thing in working on your cars in the apartment parking lot is do it quickly! don't leave it on blocks for any reason. if you can't finish it up or have to leave it unattended, make sure the wheels are back on it and it is not on jacks of anykind! (definite liability issue here for the apartment) This is also where the neighbors will complain too. If you are out there w/ the truck, they will likely let it be.

As for neighbors, offer to help them on some of the easier fixes for their cars. they will be grateful and not likely to turn you in when you need to work on yours.
