in michigan salt, snow and everything else will find it's way in.

with the style of driving i would be really concerned with the rear window's

My rear glass?

I doubt you will find any info on it, I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet...its close to a 609, but using 35 spline 9" center with a sterling 10.5 outers...

sorry i shoulda specified. rear glass in the explorer. my brother brought up the point that if i go with an explorer it would be nice for the kid's right up to the point where i blow out a side window.

Good news, locker is fine, everything looks to be in place.

Bad news, ring gear is broke.....F'n yukon gold.....

This is why low pinions are bad news up front..

High pinion time!

Kinda like what gwaii is running on his Ranger, yeah?

Yep, something like that...

Was he running a 10.25 or a 10.5? Still an awesome idea.

He is running the 10.25....pretty much the same thing, only difference besides the ring gear being 0.25 larger, the 10.5 came standard with discs....Im going custom width, thats about the only difference...

Stripped the front axle of it's gears today and shipped em off for warranty approval. I hope they cover them.

So here is my plan, may change, but as of right now, I am picking up a FW HP D44 tomorrow. I am thinking of just leaving it full width and removing the spacers I have in the front, so I will be about 1" or so wider in the front than I am in the rear.

Only issues right now, I need a new carrier for the HP gears, they don't sell thick cut gears for HP to correct like the LP. ~$65
Need to buy HP 4.88 gears ~$178 for yukons
I need to buy 6 weld in bungs for steering and track bar. ~$44
I need to fab a new track bar mount for the axle and new longer track bar, drag link and tierod....so 10' of DOM ~$60
then maybe one chromo long side shaft ~$130

So a total of about ~$477 then shipping.

SO would it be worth putting the money into the HP or just leave the LP, replace the gears, if not warrantied, ~$220 then just run it and save for my 1 ton rig?

what do ya all think??

if you are going to go 60's, then i say just save up for that. But for an additional 250 bucks, you could have the HP axle, which i personally think is a better setup, mainly because you will almost never have to worry about snagging the pinion on anything.

im confused on the thick cut gears statement.....

When you go lower gears the ring gear gets thicker and the pinion gear gets smaller naturally. They sell thick cut ring gears to compensate for that or you can get a carrier for the lower gears. Basically if you have a carrier for higher gears, you can buy thick cut gears in LP to compensate, but HP doesn't have that.

Clear as mud?

And LP run on the coast side of the gear, under load the gears push away from each other. HP run on the drive side of the gear and under load pull in towards each other. HP is stronger, never knew it till now. I thought it was a ground clearance issue also.
