Kyle M's Ranger Rebuild

the 8.8 is stronger then the d44...seems a better option to me

Kyle Ive got a set of 5x4.5 to 6x5.5 spacers that im not gonna use now. I had them when I had my waggy 44 front and 8.8 rear. I think I payed $200 for them but I would sell them to ya for $100 plus the cost of a flat rate box if your interested. edit found pics

I really want to stick with the 8.8, it is already geared. Looks like I am gonna go adapotors, thanks! But it will be nice to get the width and the fact I wont have custom parts will be real nice. Also since I am still rockin the ranger axle and I want the explorer axle, just don't have the funds to build one yet, this will be perfect cus I wont have to buy stuff twice.

i must of missed it, but why do you have a 6lug front?

Because I put chevy brakes on my EB knuckles. I could have gone 5 by 5.5 with just swaping hubs and rotors, but I didn't wanna spend the cash, the chevy stuff I have I got for free.

oh ok. what page is this at? i just went back a bit and never seen it, id like to see it

Alright, another mini update. I am getting my disk brake set up figured out, thought I would post it up and shed a little light on my discoveries since I wasn't able to find a whole lot about the set up I am going to use.

I got a corporate 10 bolt axle for free from my buddy, he was gonna scrap it, and I knew the knuckles looked the same as mine so i wanted to see what I could make work. What I wanted to do was take the spindles and backing plates and put them on my EB drum knuckles because I read that they "might" fit. My concern is what would I use for stub shafts, locking hubs, and what bolt pattern I would have to run.

So after tearing down the 10 bolt I found that sure enough, the spindles will bolt up, the stubs are the same length and same spline count as my 44 stubs and I can use my Ford locking hubs in the Chevy hubs(slid one in there and it fit). I really wanted to have the 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern but it appears the inner bearing has a larger id so it wont work (unless someone knows of a special bearing i could use??) SO it looks like I will be running a 6 bolt wheel.

So after all this, I am happy I have found my front brake set up (free) and now I know what shafts I can buy, so add another thing to the buy list, axle shafts. Now I just need to decide on my steering, the 10 bolt has one flat top for cross over steering, might just use those knuckles. Any suggestions on that?

Here are a few pictures from the tear down

the EB 44 shaft is in the middle, others are 10 bolt shafts

the one flat top 10 bolt knuckle, but it is on the drivers side, may be an issue? How can I make that work?

then my 44 ready to be torn down the rest of the way....

I didn't write too much about it, but I used my stock EB knucles, then put all 10 bolt brakes on it. I bought new calipers for an 83 chevy too. I have about $60 total into my brakes.

If there is anything you wanna know, just ask.

ok, I thought only the EB 30s were drum.
I think if i were you i would put on D44 3/4ton outters. that would be cool

Alright, sold......just gotta sell some shit first!

But why in the hell would someone spend so much on a set up and decide later that is wont work?? I could buy like 20 trail trucks for that!

Those axles are so cool looking, but is the one rear end upside down ????

Robert

Probably is, you have to run those backwards to keep them rolling forward since they are geared at the hub....may be wrong but I think that is why.
