so why do people cut the tires?

so why do people cut the tires?

Many reasons.

It adds more forward biting edges, essentially more lugs. More voids so they clean better in mud. Makes the lugs conform better to the terrain. Maybe they're tire is worn and they're increasing the tread depth. Etc.

Tires on....

My spares

They are more rashed up than I noticed last night, not sure how I am gonna like that being I still drive the truck to the trails. I still need to get them balanced. I also want to get narrower rims so my rim isn't so exposed. Anyone wanna trade the 8" wide rims for my 10"s?

Winch wired up and functional, see the control box behind the grill?

I wanna cut them to make the tread deeper and I want to split the lugs like Cheepthrills did

I just finished grooving my ltbs and working on grooving a set of thornturds.

Heres the thornturds I did this morning...

No kiddin! But that is a lot of work to put inot those tires

I'm gonna have to look into a tire groover

so if there is all these benefits to doing it, why doesnt the factory do it? Just asking, not trying to be a smart ass, I just never heard of this before.

Why doesn't the factory offer locked axles in a Ranger? Or doubled t-cases? Or solid axles? Or V8's? Or diesels?

I'm sure there are many reasons why the factory chose the tread design they did. Maybe it was for better streetability (they're DOT tires after all), or maybe they chose larger tread blocks for longer tread life. Maybe the tread design they came up with was more based for "all terrain" rather than a tire geared towards just rocks or just mud, etc.

By grooving a tire, you can essentially "tune" it for your application.
