hey guys, i just picked up a 88 ford ranger 4x4 with a 2.9 it had sat for a while so i tossed in a new battery and some fresh gas been driving it for a couple of weeks runs really good, and christmas eve i jump into drive the girlfriend home and i start it and its making a knocking sound so i turned it off checked the oil it was a bit low but nothing major so today i had the time top top it up and i fired it up again and its doing the same thing. i didnt drive it that night its just sat till today. any ideas of what might cause this?? i dont think it could be anything to crazy cause it was fine before and when i had driven it earlier it was okay.

would the pcv valve being clogged cause this? or nad plugs and wires?

had a 92 2.9 and in the mornings when i started it up it would tick for a little but went away once the motor started to warm up. it didnt tick at all during the warmer months but once it got colder it would tick.

ok well should i just let it warm up?? and see if it stops like it had sat for a day then i started it and it was fairly cold oputside

anyone have any ideas? i have nothing to drive till i figure this out

If a "tune up" has not been done for some time....it sure couldn't hurt to get those refreshed.

has the codes been retrieved ??

it is a knock...meaning heavy thud?? OR a click or ping type sound More high pitched??

ALSo might not hurt to changed the oil and filter too.....in case the oil filter has a internal failure. this way you can monitor what the oil is like coming out

maybe a weak oil pump which would in turn make it knock due to a lack of oil.
