First of all, I am broke a$ F***.

Last year I put a gently used motor in my 88 ranger. (only reason it was removed was for a 5.0 swap) Ran and drove for aprox 100 miles. Started knocking on the way home one morning, drove for about 2 miles untill I got home. Knocking never real got bad, but the motor did start to run rough, did not continue to run it for fear of any real damage. I am assuming it was a lack of oil pressure and the lifters were colapsing.

Motor is now out and there was some "debris" on the oil pickup screen. Not bearing parts or metal, just junk. Read that the 2.9 has oiling issues. Oil and internals are not dirtier than any other motor I have had apart. (Oil pan off only at this point)

Planning on installing a new High Volume pump, doing a little cleaning and putting it back in, but my concience says differant. Would pulling and cleaning the rockers and new lifters also be recommended?

What would you do?

Personally I would put in a new pump since you're there and run it. If it needed more wirk' I would do it then.

Sounds like you caught it just in time.

Yes. Might as well if you don't want the motor to knock for a long time. they are oviously known for wearing out.

Finally back home and pulled the valve covers off, much to my suprise I found light rust in spots, not a huge ammount. I assume from the motor sitting. Rocker shafts and oil holes look good. Pulling rod and mains tomorrow.

My question is now, If and how can I go about flushing the oil galleys in the block? Can an adapter be made to flush through the oil pressure sender or oil filter?

rods and mains are fine. Complete brain fart... Drill motor on oil pump drive shaft to pressurise and flush the system.
