kinda weird

Ok, checked wires and timing both are correct, the spout connector was indeed plugged in. Any thing else that I could try, that you can think of before I shim a starter that shouldn't have them. Thanks

Does your power steering pump spin freely by hand with the belt off?

Will take belt off and get back to you in a bit

It does not spin freely, there is some, resistance

Yeah there should be a slight resistence just not to about to lock up. Forgot to mention to spin the idler/s, water pump, alt and make sure the AC if you have it is disenguaging while you had the belt off. :dunno:

K checked alt, and water pump they spin good, a/c not hooked up right know

Hmmm:icon_confused:. Hey come to think of it my first ranger started really resisting starting, I though voltage/connections and had been through them and they were all supreme. Then it got to the point of starter grind and finally locked. I smelled fuel bigtime and it was dripping out of the exhaust, pulled the plugs and rolled it over and kapoof massive fuel out of the cylinders. It was the fuel pressure regulator that for a time was slightly then progressivly hydroing until it gave out all the way and would fully hydrolock when I tried to start it. Its a longshot but is your engine oil level high, dilluted or smell like gas? Pull the hose going to your brake vacuum unit and sniff for gas, the hose goes from the brake unit to a vacuum tree on the manifold and if the FPR fails it dumps raw fuel into the manifold and the rear two cylinders get the most. Worth a check I reckon.

Ok, can smell gas in oil, I think I will replace regulator to be on safe side. Walked back to exhaust pipe and there is a puddle of clear water about six to eight inches, didn't really smell fuel, hopefully its just condensation. Just changed plugs and didn't notice any fuel but wasn't really looking for it either.. Hopefully just regulator will let you know, do I need a special tool to disconnect fuel lines from it?

Yes there is a tool ( smart person you are). There is a small bolt and clip that holds the FPR into the fuel rail (o-ring seal comes with it). On the incoming fuel side is a "GARTER" spring connection. Its a cheap color coded set you can get from say O'Reilly for about 10 bucks. The ones I have are Powerbuilt A/C and Fuel line quick disconnect set ( 6 piece set) PN# 648424, I've used them over 10 times and still like new.
