can i drive my 84 ranger with a 5.0 and aod tranny without a kickdown cable? like safely down the road. no faster then about 40 mph. how long will it last?

I would say no,at least not very far at all!
A spin around the block may not hurt but thats about it,I wouldnt chance hurting the Trans for it.Someone with more knowledge than me can speak up but..............
I hate pulling Transmissions!!!

The kickdown isn't used unless you punch it,e.g. while passing. I'd say you would be OK temporarily.

Edit; Oops, I'm wrong.... again! Sucks being old and out of the loop for so long.

It is used to adjust the throttle valve pressure for the transmission, it's known as a TV cable, not a kick down cable.

I know that on our race car at work (fox body mustang with a B&M Racing AOD) without the cable adjusted properly the transmission shift very very sloppily and slips

I'm with Sasquatch, without the cable, the tranny doesn't know how much throttle there is, thus the pressures in the tranny is wrong, and can cause problems really quick. That is what I've been told by somebody who "knows his s***"

with most trannies (such as a c6 or c4), you CAN get away with not using the KICKDOWN. however, with an AOD, it has a TV cable, not a kickdown. and the tv tells the trans more important information than a regular kickdown does. you NEED it to drive it.

Yeah, check it out. On the older trannies you don't need the rod, or cable. The 700R4 uses the cable to adjust the control pressure and you will burn the tranny up without it. The clutches won't have enough pressure on them to hold. If the tranny you have uses the cable for control pressure, don't run it without it, and make sure it's adjusted.

Absolutely do not drive

You WILL destroy your AOD before you reach the end of your driveway. That cable is extremely important for regulating line pressures and controlling the servos that apply the clutch bands. If you do drive it say goodbye to reverse and 2nd gear. I speak from experience as i had a poorly adjusted TV cable ruin my old trans before i even got the truck on the road.

IIRC you should have 30psi at idle at the TV pressure port with the cable adjusted properly.
