I know on some of the cars they have a sticker on the inside of the trunk lid with the code but I cannot find this one. I cannot take it to a dealer it is not running good enough right now and no tags yet. I got this explorer free and it is in pretty decent shape so I am going to fix it..
I wouln't have any idea how much difference there is between a '96 and a '99, but when we bought our '99 4 door, the dealer showed me where to look. He opened the rear door, removed the left panel (jack storage) and looked up and forward in that compartment and there was a sticker on the electronic unit in there. Don't remember what this unit was for, but everything was the same in our '01.
there is a wicked good write up on explorerforum.. it is indeed exactly where the previous poster stated..
as i recall, there is one MASTER code which should be the one on the RAP unit, and then a user definable code.. also you may luck out, check the glovebox and owner's manual for a little card with the code (it was given to the original owner)
the following post will show you where to find it, and tell you how to reprogram it etc.
Last spring when I purchased my 2006 F150 Lariat (has keypad) they told me the master code was in the glove compartment, attatched somewhere in the user's manual. God how I do miss that truck.
