Has anyone else done this set up, does it work? does anyone notice a difference or is it too hot in the engine bay to run this set up.

i have a fake k&n filter on mine. nothing really noticabe in the power area, but you can hear it sucking the air in alot more

did you do it right off the intake manifold or where the air box existed?

You'll want it as close to fresh air as possible. The intake system stock is a fresh air intake, it pulls fresh air from the front of the truck. The cooler the air, the more dense it is.

I would recommend a K&N drop in filter for your air box, if you're looking to try a K&N filter. It can flow more air than the truck will demand. FWIW, There's wrong with a standard paper filter. I prefer the paper filter because they're cheap and I don't need to spend a couple hours cleaning them when need be.

If you do go with a cone, try to get as much cool air to it as possible, but ultimately you'll end up with exactly what you started with... I would also be reluctant to do anything if you have to pass an inspection, you will remove systems that will cause them to have a fit.

I have a cone air filter on my 86 2.9l, i hooked it to the stock intake hose, and i have the cone resting on the bottom part of the airbox, so its still getting cold air from the bottom half of the airbox. As for power...eh it doesnt improve it enough to do it, it makes the intake sound, which sounds decent with a aftermarket exhaust....

i would do that same set up but have a shield around it with a rubber line around the top and then if i wasn't into mud i would rig up a hood scoop kinda idea.
