Just took my heads off today... (Huge pics)

It looks as if there may have been a water leak on #5 cylinder at the upper right (on block) water passage at the bottom, just above the valve relief. See where the red seal is missing.

The head would would match up at the bottom right. Everything in the cylinder is nice and steam cleaned. See the squench area in the head by the watter passage, nice and clean. A look at the gaskets might give a better indication. Water was definitely getting into that cylinder. I should have left a pix of the block for comparison, but I ain't gonna do it over.:)shady

I plan on doing a compression test on my 94 3L.. dont mean to high jack the thread but i was wondering what the compression of each cylinder would be for a healthy engine? its got 162,000 km's on it. Also i have herd when doing compression test to let it turn over 3 times and also have been told to let it turn over 5 times which is correct? And then the hioghest reading is the cylinders compression?

i ran a compression test on my engine last weekend and the pressure was 150 give or take for all the cylinders. just a little tid bit of info...

sorry i cant make that out can you go into paint or something and highlight it? the flash skrewd where i was looking b4

yea , that is what my left head looked like when i got them to turn in for a core , the valves were white just like that , mine was caused by a blown head hasket , between the cylingers , no coolant leaked it , but compression was uber low

I guess that I'm gonna have to be stuck not operating anything more than a fridge now

hey

hey 04 edge was it a lot of work to do the 4x2 to 4x4 conversion how long would you say it would take and wicked sludge how common is it for the vulcans to blow head gaskets its seems to be pretty common on here?

its common for any engine to blow head gaskets if the cooling system isnt maintained. ive yet to see a 3.0 with blown head gaskets that didnt have black sludge built up in the recovery bottle due to neglect.

confused

my buddy had a 91 i think it was tempo with the vulcan and that motor ran right to 300000kms he starting to get the white crap in his oil then he dumped a bottle of bars leak in it and it fixed the problem but i know like everyone says that the vulcan is tuff thats why my new ranger and my old one both had the vulcan i just don't get how they keep blowing them up. when i went to the impound to get my stuff out of my wrecked 99 i ran the motor with no coolant since it was a front end collision and ran it for an hour with no coolant and it didn't die!

Are you sure you took those pictures? They look exactly like mine when I removed my heads because I had to replace the head gaskets! lol

There is also overheating "stains" on some areas of the cylinder walls... Man you really hate that truck... Get a junkyard engiene and swap it... repairing this one seems to require an overhaul. And if You are going to take this kind of care don't spend this much money on it. Don't clean the replacement engine before swap... don't clean the engine bay... don't even change the oil in the new engine... F*** just junk the truck.

Calm down tiger :icon_rofl:

I never updated this thread but I have my truck back together and it runs great. And BTW I got the truck with a trashed cooling system so I didn't expect it to run that great and I planned on a 302 swap, but I'm keeping the 3.0 to see how long it lasts with my abuse :icon_twisted:

Old thread by the way.

Same thing with my truck. I bought it at an auction for 3 grand and it needed a ton of work done to it. The oil was so gritty it looked like it had never been changed. Gotta replace my ball joints sometime this week
