I went mudding with a buddy on sunday and we both thought it would be a good idea to "rinse" off our trucks by driving through the edge of a lake. LOL. well needless to say his lifted ranger did fine and my stock 93 on 31's sucked up a bit of water.

I had completely forgotten about the stock placement of the intake on my truck and I sucked up a bunch of water. I still need to get it home before I fully diagnose whether or not the engine is saveable but until then thought I would ask for some advice ahead of time.

Lets assume the engine is hydrolocked, what years of rangers/explorers would be easiest to swap? without having to do much or any wiring? I understand from doing some research on the forums here that the 97+ engines come with the newer computer OBDII.
I did some researching but couldnt find anything that directly referred to my issue.

Your best bet is to find the same truck...
ie a ranger with same engine and tranny, from the same year.

thats your best chance to have everything match.

Change the oil and filter, pull the plugs and spin it over to spit any water out the cylinders. Fog a bit of oil in, put the plugs back in and fire it.

^^^ that. You might not need to change the oil if water didn't get higher than the breather, check it first. Or is the dip tube lower?
You can hope that you didn't bend a rod. After it fires [hopefully] do a compression test. A really low cylinder might mean a bent rod tho that is just a WAG. Also plan on changing all the other fluids, like axles, t-case, trans.
Good luck,

Richard

I will be doing this once I get it home, and hopefully it will work. Thanks for the advice though, first time with a hydro-locked engine. hopefully last, cause I will be moving the intake to a higher position. lol. lesson learned!!!

^^^ the motor didnt make any loud sounds when it shut off so Im thinking I should be ok.

Yea you need to roll that thing over and spit the water out of the cylinders ASAP! You may want to have someone else roll it over so you can really see it spit, just remember its coming out under high pressure and it usually only takes a few revolutions to clean it out but just bump it a couple times first. Good luck man.:icon_thumby:

Well got it home and started to tear it apart to clean it up. All seems pretty good there is next to no dirt that I can see. I have only taken off the upper and lower intake manifolds as well as the valve covers. My Dad has a suction thing we hooked up to the air compressor to suck out as much water as possible from the intake ports and the cylinders without taking off the heads.
I have gotten both my brother and Dad to try and manually turn the crank but it wont budge (I know this probably means I F$@&ed up the bottom end.) I have also been trying to get it to turn over by turning the ignition but all I was getting was a click even with the battery fully charged and still hooked up to the charger. So this leads me to believe the starter is gone.

I have also drained the oil but there was only maybe 50ml of water.
I will be taking the starter in tomorrow to be tested and see if I need a new starter.
Is there anything else I can do to get the engine to crank?
Or is this basically telling me my engine is screwed and I need to find a new motor?
Should I just pull the heads and check the cylinders out? Or would it be better to pull the oil pan and have a look see from underneath?
Also the number on the gasket in the middle there does the 92 TM stand for the casting of the heads?

Thanks

You did pull the spark plugs right?

Yes I pulled the spark plugs. That was the first thing I did before I started tearing into it.
Getting the starter checked tomorrow.

Yea dam hopefully you dont have bent rods or a broken crank. Keep us updated and good luck.

There's almost 300,000km on the engine so it wouldn't surprise me to have bent a rod or worse.

Mileage basically wont have any bearing on rods getting bent, its the secondary result of a catastrophic event like hydrolock, dropped valve, seized bearings/pistons, low oil/extreme temp ect. or just plain defective rod.

Yeah makes sense, I was just thinking more along the lines of higher mileage motor means more wear and tear which would result in a greater chance that things would break.

Got the starter tested and the guy said it works perfectly fine. So I guess the next step is taking apart the bottom end.
So i suppose ill be taking the bottom end apart and see what the damage is.

Well I tried every possible method to crank the engine, and there was nothing so I removed it and checked out the connecting rods. The one on the left is the only cylinder with a twisted and bent rod.
I have tentatively found an engine for to replace this one. It is out of a 92 Explorer automatic.
I should be able to just drop this engine into my 93 Ranger and go right?
