Just picked up a 1996 ranger XL

Hi,

I just picked up a 1996 Ranger XL, 3.0 V6, 4x4, Auto Transmission. It only has 54k on it and is in immaculate condition. I did pay $6000 for it which is quite a bit over retail but given the condition and miles I figured it was worth it.

Anyways I would like to know if anybody knows of any known issues for this Make, Model, Year. I know ford gets a bad wrap for little things going wrong, most of which are easily fixable with a quick mod or fix. So anybody that knows much about the truck I would love any info thanks.

Change the transmission fluid now and continue to do it every 40k or so. Use Mercon V only.

Can this be done at home? I don't know much about auto transmissions but I am mechanically inclined.

Yes, it's pretty easy but also messy. Get a large diameter catch pan and also lay lots of carboard underneath it. Unbolt the pan, let all the fluid out, change the filter, clean and replace pan, refill with fresh fluid.
