86 bronco 2 auto.

new rebuild just over 500 miles.

new fuel pumps and filter.

new distubitor cap and rotor

question is, im thinking and feeling like it doesnt have a lot of top end power.

i dont have a timing light but ive got it pretty close. it idles at 850 900 rpms.

just feels gut less for new motor at highway speeds. i mean i know its a small motor, but my saturn with 189*** miles on it will smoke this truck. lol.

anything i should look at or any advice would be helpful.

They were pretty gutless to begin with from what I've heard from a few people. You know with the introduction of emissions it made the that way:( then again I could be wrong since you have the 2.9

yeah i guess im just not used to how gutless it really is. but no biggie. lol still does frickin awesome in the hills

Depending on the Saturn engine they should both be about 140hp

Bronco II weights in at 3,200lbs
Saturn 2,300lbs
That's 30% more for the Bronco II to drag around

Not to mention the wind resistance at speed, lol

I would imagine gearing would be a little different as well.

Outside of the timing chain being off by 1 tooth I think you got what you got with 140hp, 3,200lbs and the aerodynamics of a box with wheels :)

lol. yeah the saturn is pretty arrow-like compared to the bronco.

if i were to upgrade the exhaust with pacesetter headers and h-pipe with dual pipes with a settle sounding muffler. how much hp am i looking at. just wondering

Mine has plenty adequate top-end power... It's the low-end torque that's nothing worth raving about (pretty normal for a 2.9L).

I suggest you go get a timing light for it.

thanks junkie. i will do that then, hopefully it makes a difference

Because of computer controlled fuel/air mixtures bolt-on engine parts can't always do what they used to.
i.e. headers and intakes.

Removing the engine fan and installing an electric fan frees up a few HP.

Not exactly gutless, but back when these vehicles were built highway speed was about 55mph as the normal, so now that a lot of highways/freeways are 65-75mph people realize these trucks weren't built for that.

My 84 B2 is a little sluggish from stop to about 35mph, after that its not too bad, and it will do 65-75mph easily just don't know how long it would do it continuously.

thanks for the info ron and wildbill. ive got the timing adjusted and it seems to have better pick up at highway speeds. lol but ill look into finding a electric fan.
