Hey guys. A couple of weekends i was lucky enough to find and purchase my first ford ranger. Its a 1996 Extended Cab 2wd with a 2.3 l four cylinder. It is also a manual transmission. It had been sitting for 3 years without running and with a new battery it started within seconds. I paid $750 Canadian for the truck. I had to slide hammer the old ignition cylinder out because there were no keys. I would really like to find a schematic for the installation of the cylinder to the column. i can not figure how to keep the new one in place. Also i took apart the cold air intake to get rid of the air muffler and found oil in it. Is this normal? ;missingteeth;

good find and congrats on the purchase. the procedure for re-installing the lock cylinder might not work for you if you damaged the column in the slide hammering process. your supposed to remove the plastic cloumn cover, turn the key forward to the on position (i realize you didnt have the keys or any other choice for that matter) and then insert a piece of curved wire or a pick tool (depending on whether it has tilt wheel or not) through the bottom side of the column. there is a retention pin that needs to be pushed in with the wore or pick and then i believe it just slides out. as for the oil in the intake tube, check that your pvc valve is working properly because if it isnt your engine is going to vent the crank case pressure along with some oil, back into your intake piping. welcome to TRS!

ignition cylinder

The steering column was undamaged in the slide hammer technique, thank god. the problem i am having is at the base where the cylinder fits into the the column there is the gear that the key turns to start the engine. For the life of me i can not figure out how to get the cover plate back into position. It was getting dark when it was removed and i am drawing a blank on how to reinstall it. Checked the pvc valve as mention and you were right it was faulty so it has been replaced.:D
