I just got a 4.0 to rebuild for 50 bucks. I dont know where to begin but I did want to rebuild one. The one I have in my truck now is O.K. but lets face it, an 18 year old motor could uses some rebuilding. Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated as I kno not what I am doing. Except what Mr Haynes tells me!

well first question, is it a OHV or a SOHC that you bought..that would be the first thing..then we can go somewhere, well i can only go the SOHC route, cause thats what i rebuilt ahah but yaa..

first off, throw the haynes away.

Run far far far away , i just rebuilt a 4.0 , well , i have not finished it yet , and it has cost me about $2,000+ so far , and it is just a pain in the ass to find top notch aftermarket parts for the engine

yaa the haynes sucked when i was doing it....which engine did you rebuild that it costed 2000 plus..

i think for a quality power build, i did it in like 2500 or something, but for a normal rebuild...not nearly as much as that

power build for 2500? please explain and can you list what you placed into your build?

I did a 90MT and the 2K mark sounds about right (I am in Canada) and this build kept crank - rods - pistons and heads. complete with 410 cam.

ahah 2500 was off the top of my head...but here goes..

what went into the engine...

bore/hone block, ported heads, valve job -900
weisco low comp pistons/wrist pins/rings- 775 (SSM)
new timing set-400 (rockauto.com)
gasket kit-250 i think (rockauto)
random bolts-100

i think thats about it..

Did you notice any greater improvements from doing it? and I thought it wasn't advisable to bore out the sohc for this makes the walls too weak?

umm bored the max recommended, .030.

greater improvements from what? boring? rebuilding?

by greater i meant, before you tore the motor down (i take it you were driving it) till after you built it back up. did you notice greater motor performance?

i bought a junkyard motor so that i could drive my truck while i was rebuilding..it was the same motor, a 2003 4.0 SOHC, after i put a supercharger from a ford lightning on it, yes i got much better performance. thats why i built the bottom end to handle alittle more, rather than putting OEM pistons back in.

sorry for clutering up the thread here, angie, PM me.

but back to topic, i would say.

-figure out which motor it is, OHV/SOHC
-find out what is wrong with it (who you bought it from may be able to tell you that)
-decide how you want to go with this rebuild..return it to OEM, or some sort of different build, power being in the back of my head when i say that
-probably do alittle more research on what rebuilding takes..special tools you will need...(pain in the butt...) that sorta stuff.
-then i would say, get your hands dirty start ripping it appart

hope that helps alittle

ahhh gotcha. :) didn't you replace the mains and the con bearings? if not sounds like trouble.

main bearings yes, connecting rod bearings were well within tolerance

if it is an 18 y/o motor then it is not a SOHC.

you need to talk to AllanD about a book . Has something to do with understanding your Ford 60* V6. it is out of print but you may be able to find a copy, I don't know how relevant it will be to the 4.0L
