I hate splicing into factory wiring, so I bought all of the harnesses for the speakers and the stereo on my 96 Ranger. I also bought one of the dash kits. Well, fast forward 2 years, and I'm graduating to a bigger F150 because our family has grown. I just put a new deck and speakers into the Ranger, and didn't quite feel like giving those up. So, the factory deck and speakers went back in.
I thought I might share that the speaker harnesses are the same, the stereo harnesses are the same, and even the dash kit worked. My Ranger does not have a factory amp, but the F150 does. At first I thought I was going to have to purchase some kind of a bypass kit, but I searched a bit online and found something very cool. If you have a factory amp, there is a harness clipped to the dash almost directly behind the vent that is just left of the stereo. Just unplug that, and the harness plugs right in.
Maybe this is common knowledge, but I thought some others may not know.
Best thing of all, not one damn dime was spent to change it over.
