I haven't bought much bigger stuff at junk yards yet. I am in the process of planning my build and want some advice on how to stretch a buck and make sure that I don't get ripped off at the junkyard.

First, what are some ball park prices on drive line components? These are all RBV components. (Except for the d44 stuff)
8.8 explorer axles (whole)
Axle shafts
Waggy D44
Flat top D44 knuckles,
Leaf spring packs,
Steering boxes,
Steering shafts,
Steering columns,
PS pumps,
Transfer cases,
M5OD transmissions (I would guess 200ish)
Radiators,

What other items that people have bought and what they paid for them?

Negotiation techniques and things to keep in mind when dealing.

Obviously when trying to argue a price down you need to make sure that the unknown history and the possibility of needing a rebuild are factored into the price.

that depends greatly on where you are

prices vary enormously depending on where in the country you are, weather you are talking about "They-pull-it" or U-pull-it junkyards.

Around here I can get a RUNNING engine that I can SEE running
before it's pulled for $175.

If I want to take a gamble on my own instincts for picking an engine
and pulling it myself I can get one for as little as $50.

So far between my brother and I we are 31/1/1

31 good engines one that ran but had minor issues (a nasty valve tap on a 3.0)
and one that was simply NFG.

around here its about $100 per axle and probably in the $40 range for a steering column. maybe $50 per leaf spring pack. as far as negotiation goes, i just set a decent price ill pay before hand, give my buddy the rest of my cash and pull the 'thats all i got man' routine to get stuff for cheap. if it doesnt work, walk out and go to a different yard. just make sure youre reasonable about the price you set.

heck you cant find an M5OD in a scrap yard around here for less than 500.00 and axle are about 100 a piece or so.

This is from the local Pick-N-Pull's price list, which I just happen to have sitting in front of me.

(prices are per unit unless otherwise specified)
8.8 explorer axles (whole).... Axle Assembly.... $50
Axle shafts.... Axle - RWD.... $10
Waggy D44.... Axle Assembly.... $50
Flat top D44 knuckles (can't find price, if they aren't on above probably another $50)
Leaf spring packs.... Leaf Spring.... $10
Steering boxes (don't see on list)
Steering shafts (don't see on list)
Steering columns.... $35
PS pumps.... $12
Transfer cases.... $35
M5OD transmissions.... $50
Radiators.... $35

The items I can't find are probably on here under a different name, but it's to early to try and figure out.

EDIT: I should mention that many of these parts which would be useful to us are gone already. Heck the place only has 4 or 5 RBVs (excluding Aerostar) so it's hard to find anything. I'm about to go pull the last set of BII sway bars they have unless they're already gone.

The U-Pull-It near me has similar prices to what JoshT posted.

There are generally at lest 8-10 Ranger's (usually '86-'94, but newer ones are appearing) and at least 10 Exploders there at any one time and they normally completely turn over their inventory every 5-6 months.

My U-pull-it prices are similar, but my favorite u-pull-it will actually torch stuff off for you for a small fee.

Yeah I pay $10 each for leaf springs too, but I can get the pair of them torched off the donor vehicle for another $10 and never even break a sweat.

$10 to torch an axle loose and they will pull and engine and/or trans for $30.

Dang, things must just be expensive here.

I payed 50 for the two Exlporer leafs I bought (the other 2 yards want 70 and 100). And ALL of the yards around here want over 600-700 bucks for a M5OD. It was 200 for ONE SIDE of the d35 TTB (the side with the differential in it). Manual transfer cases, the yards around here want 150-200. The power steering pump, I forget how much I payed for that, I will have to ask my dad when he gets home, But I think it was somewhere around 100.

I know those prices becuase that is what I had to buy when I fixed my truck when I got it. And like I said, that isn't just the yard closest to, me, it is all of them in this area that I looked at (3-4, is all we have that I know of). (minus the T-case and tranny, I just want to get those those get rid of Ford Automatic crap :icon_thumby:)

Will yall's local yard allow jacks or at least get something lifted for you. The one I listed prices for above won't do either, except before 3:00PM Monday-Friday. IDK bout you but I can't just take off work and go get a vehicle lifted to pull parts. Seems odd to me since most folks go on Saturday or Sunday. I ended up only being able to get the rear sway bar since they have the front end of that BII resting on a welded wheel that happens to be located under the I-beams. At this point I think I'm finished with them, doubt they'll be getting my business again, rather buy new.

The u-Pull-it near me will allow you to take any tool back in the yard except a cutting torch. I've seen guy's go back with generators and gas powered air compressors along with all manner of tools run by them.

If you ask real nice they'll even flip a vehicle on it's side for you so you can safely pull an axle or tranny.

This site does a nationwide search of salvage yards. Put in your zip code to have them sorted by distance.

www.car-part.com

I was able to find a flairside box for $200 and a 8.8 with 4.10 gears and TL for $265 delivered to my door from over 300 miles away.
