Josh40601's Build Thread. (D-ranged)

Life happened my brotha! Soon as there are no chances for snow, and I have my 6.Slo sitting on an engine stand, she's getting cut up again. You will be the first to know.

Been a while since I updated you guys on D Ranged. It's been serving as the dd through this "winter" but last week I found a deal I couldn't pass up. 2001 Ranger xlt with 127k on the ticker for 1000 bucks. It's a 4 door, auto, power everything, clean title, and in pretty good condition other than one minor detail....

Well, the PO never turned it in, so the title is still clean. It's also a 2WD. We will be moving the engine, harness, trans, cab, and bed from the 2001 frame to D's frame.

So this brings up a few questions....
* What needs to be done to reset the airbag system?
* What transmissions will bolt up to the 3.0? Remember this is a 2001, so it's OBD2
* are the fuel and brake systems the same on obd2 trucks as obd1 trucks?

So now raises the "I thought you were putting an LS engine in it?? I was. Then I was gifted a 1968 C20 Longbed 2wd that will be a following project. The engine and trans combo will be worth more in that, and it allows D to maintain "factory" ford stuff. This also allows me to keep it as a DD.

Fuel system is different, 3.0 is its own category, no other engine (2.3 or 4.0) family will fit. Replace the withstand, and your good to go...

What is in D now? Don't do the 3.0. It's hateful.

4.0 OHV. If it had the SOHC or even 2nd gen 4.0 OHV (OBD2) then i would keep it.

I guess i will be swapping gas tanks and fuel lines too. Thanks for the info Rick.

Any ideas on the airbag system? Starting the teardown of the Tan one this weekend.

The fuel tanks are the same, just the sending unit and the return lines need to be transplanted. The airbag system just needs the bags changed, nothing more...
SVT

Tank in D is in the back, so I would have to extend the 3.0 lines to keep my tank

So there is no computer or sensor that needs to be reset? Any chance you know where the sensors are on the frame?

Just inside each headlight behind the grille/bumper mounted to the core support, they are black boxes about 2"x2"

Alright. I will look for them on the truck tomorrow.

full weekend of teardown. Tan truck is in multiple pieces and ready for the engine, trans, and fuel tank to be removed. Multiple parts went to the Red Ranger as well, which helped a couple issues we were having with it. Also seen what all damage was done from the impact. The frame is bent, water pump/fan mount is broken off, and power steering pump pulley is toast, not including all the stuff you immediately notice when looking at the truck.

Here is a shot of the Ranger Friday before pulling into the garage.

After day 1, we had the bed off, front clip removed, radiator support removed, and body mount bolts out.

Here is the scrap pile from the front end

Day two we removed all the wiring and clips and grounds that were holding all the junk to the inner fenders. Then we pulled the rear end that we swapped under my red ranger. With the help of Dad's Bobcat, we were able to bring the frame and cab outside, and separate the two

Here is what is left on the frame.

Cab is ready to be sat on the new... errr.... older frame.

Next weekend will be removing the last bits, then tearing D down.

gonna repaint it the same?

What is wrong with your 4.0L? Why in the hell would you go putting in a 3.0L??

Also as far as the airbag going off...it could need seatbelt pretensioners and a new restraints control module which needs to be programmed at the dealership....

Very similar. There will be pearl this time though.

I want OBD2, I already have the 3.0, and the 4.0 is ragged out, leaks everywhere, and the transmission is finally going out. 200k with me owning it, it's done.

I don't see why everyone hates on the 3.0. The 2wd edge I built for my buddy who was deployed had the 3-0, and it worked great. The 3-0 in my little red truck works great. Would I rather have a SOHC 4.0? Of course. But I am not buying one. For the plans I have for this truck, I honestly feel the 3.0 will do fine

I'm so confused...
Thought D was getting the ls motor?

What's going on? D is getting that cab and motor now? So a 3.0 instead of a LS?

Nail on the head. Took the cab and bed from the tan truck. If I had an obd2 4-0, I'd just swap to an auto trans. Since I don't, and I have a free engine and wiring harness right here, I'm installing it.

As for the LS, it was donated to the next project on the block, a 68 c20
