I recently bought the Jets Performance programmer and went to plug it in my ranger and get some more power out. My ranger is a 1998 3.0L 4x4 I have 31s on it and haul my atv on a trailer with it sometimes. I could really use the extra power specially when hauling the bike and trailer up hill. I followed the instructions and kept getting error code:40 I have no idea what that error is and there no listing for error codes that came with it or on jegs site any help be great. I plan on e-mailing jegs about it soon but prob be long wait if they do reply. Thanks

I have the same truck and tires but with an automatic. The 5 speed would be way better with larger tires. I was thinking of getting a programmer for the same reason.

Id like to know how this story ends

i was thinking it would be a big help to shift earlier . the (265/16) 31" tires make it higher geared so it shifts at a higher road speed in relation to the RPM /powerband and amplifies the loss of power caused by the larger tires

Just found this from an old thread :

Jet programmer heads up

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a heads up that I had to have the ECM reprogrammed by the dealer before the programmer would work on my 03' 3.0L.

This is apparently a common requirement and is listed in the instruction manual as an error "software needs updated - call Jet customer service". You make the call and that's when they break the news that you get to spend and additional $40 - $100 with a trip to the dealer.

I've only had it for a few days so I can't give offer much feedback yet. It will take some very good performance to justify the cost.

Same thing happened to me. I had to take a trip to the dealer and get the ECM Updated. After that, my 03 3.0 Ranger programmed easily. I set it up for premium fuel and did notice an increase in HP.
I also have JBA Headers, K&N Intake and Gibson Dual Sport Exhaust.

I could really use the extra power

So you spent $390 for a chip (now looks like another $100 to reprogram ECM)that can't effect when the manual trans shifts and only promises "...optimizes the ignition spark advance, air to fuel ratios and (transmission shifting?) for the ultimate in power and mileage gains..."?

Where do you think all this extra (ultimate) power is going to come from; spark advance?

The OP posted this over a year ago, lol! But you make a good point. JET products are pretty much a waste of money. If you're going to get a programmer, get an SCT X-Cal. They're infinitley better.

get an SCT X-Cal. They're infinitley better.

Better because? This from SCT web site: "Whether towing a light load or a heavily loaded race trailer, SCT has a CUSTOM TUNE for your gas or diesel truck. No more struggling up mountains or hills, simply switch Power Levels before the incline and enjoy MORE POWER and MORE TORQUE instantly."

Would that be downshifting maybe? AND you just can't set this up yourself (at least not everybody) you need to have it programmed by one of their dealers. I can see the value if you've done some pretty heavy custom engine work (turbo/supercharger) and need what the stock ECM can't provide but these companies wouldn't be in business just selling to knowledgable custom engine builders.

You are absolutley correct sir. The reason that an x-cal is beneficial is because custom tunes can be written(by professional tuners), and it's not just a "one-size-fits-all" tune. There are situations when a tuner must be used such as forced induction like you mentioned, but they can also be a decent stand alone mod. The vast majority of people that I know with X-Cal tuners, even those with otherwise stock or mildly modified engines are very pleased and see increases in performance, mileage, or both.
