Jeep Dana 35 ls in a ranger dana 35

Yeah, I'm thinking you might've had a lo-ratio carrier and were trying to shim it way over to take up the huge gap that would've been between the gears.
The 3.55&up carrier has the ring gear flange mounted closer to the pinion, where the lo-ratio one puts it further from the pinion.

We didnt even have the pinion in yet, we were just test fitting the carrier, so I have no clue whether or not it was even lined up. Hell for all I know the guy could have sold my buddy the wrong carrier.

oh... well i wasnt sure if there were different number of bolts for the ring gear or different thickness for it.

FWIW the D35 "Carrier break" is 3.31 and up.

But on the Ford even the 3.27 uses the "high" (numerical) carrier.

They did make jeeps with 3.08 and 2.73 gears.
