jeep cherokee transmission questions

i bought a 1991 automatic jeep cherokee for a daily driver while im building my truck, and a few weeks after i bougt it one of the transmission cooling lines broke from its retaing clip and fell onto the exhaust where it began to ware a hole and start to leak. since then i cutout the spot in the metal line with the hole, and hose clamped a rubber hose in place. now, a few weeks later my jeep keeps fluctuating at different rpms every few seconds when driving, kind of like the jeep cant pick the right gear and jumps back and forth. could this be caused possibly because the rubber hose is clamped on tight enough and the system is loosing pressure, or should i look at the torque converter or something else?
 
The cooling line should not affect anything. I assume the fluid level in the transmission is good.
 
check to make sure you have a good vaccumm going to the modulator on the trans.

also check the kickdown linkage, it may be stuck from lack of use and a little rusty.
 
I just asked my dad about this and he said that if it dies like when u slow down u should check the speed sensor.

yeah but im wondering about it because the rubber hose that i put on still leaks a little but not very much. so i was wondering if this might affect it because air could be escaping and causing the system to loose pressure. and the fluid level is good, could putting too much fluid in the tranny cause problems ?

im not sure about the sped sensor, and mine isnt doing anything like that, and ive seen what a faulty throttle position sensor does so i know thats not the problem.
 
The cooling line is after the fluid has gone though all its hydraulic stuff and is just returning the fluid to the pan so it should not affect the operation of the unit. excess fluid is a bad thing as it gives the seals a hard time. The transmission is shifted by a module that is mounted behind the dash on the passenger side and is also connected to the engine computer so anything that's not right on the motor can affect the way the transmission reacts. check all the vacuum hoses on the motor before you go any further. And stop the leak on the cooling line so you don't end up with an empty transmission.
 
I Have The Perfect Solution...Next time buy a ranger... lol:) Jk...sorry I just had to say it...
 
i would replace the line, a junk yrd would be the cheapest bet but i cant imagine that a new one from the dealer would be that expensive given the year

the auto trans also has a overflow tube to prevent over filling
