Ive got question about making studded tired for the ice, can anyone help?

im getting a job at a local ski resort(sierra summit/china bowl) this winter... Now el nino's comin back so were going to have a crazy snow season, problem is i dont have 4wd and my tires and practically bald.

i saw the studs that are able to be inserted into the tires rubber, i have bias ply NITTO mud terrains tho. would this affect anything? and how would i go about making studded tires?

or should i go with chains, alltho i am riding on 33's so chains are probably going to be quite expensive
 
Most places wont stud your tires if you've already driven on them. You could try and see if anyone will, but I'm not sure if they'd want to.
 
Here in Newfoundland (Canada) companies that install studs in tiers will not do it on a used tire because the predrilled holes are worn down to much to insert the stud (This could be bull but that’s what they told me). Tires need to be new…. that being said I'm sure you could always do it your self as long as your tiers have the predrilled holes.

the tires you want to have studded have to be designed to be stud-able. they have holes molded into them that accept the studs.

Not true, the shop I work at Drills and studs tires even if they aren't pre drilled, I did a set of BFG A/T's the other day. And as long as the tires with pre drilled stud holes aren't worn too much or haven't been run with studs in them previously you should be able to stud them.

You can't stud bald tires though... I think the minimum tread depth we are allowed to stud is something like 9/32's or something like that.

on a side note... chains aren't too bad to carry around just incase.
 
well thats a bummer, looks like ill be usin chains and a l/s

another question my explorer 8.8 is an open diff, but id like to use a stock l/s setup can i swap it over?

i've never heard of that... i guess since you're in alaska it doesnt surprise me though. around here, its tough to find somebody to stud any tire.
 
if it were me, i'd go with a good locker for the rear diff. i drive through lots of snow every winter and mud in the spring and all my vehicles have one. Lockright's are the easiest and least expensive, but the others probably do a better job if your off-roading lots. not sure where you are, but if your in California, the only way they'll let you up the passes when it's snowing is with chains or if your driving a 4x4 with the "snowflake on the mountain" symbol on your tires.
