I changed my 3-4 shift solenoid no change still slipping out of gear. The trans guy said the rear planeterys are going bad I found two washers from that. He will rebuild it pull it out and install it for $2500.00 take about a week to fix it. Its a clean 88 Ranger 4x4 XLT just put new BFG's on it better get it fixed winter up here is rough lots of snow. Placerville transmission is going to fix it

Don't do it!

A throw-parts-at-it overhaul isn't a rebuild. There are serious problems that can old be solved with machine work in those things. THIS, for instance.

I've also heard there are issues with the servo bores, but I don't have any info about that. Very few A4LDs stay rebuilt for very long.

For a truck not worth the price of a sure-to-fail tranny rebuild, the best tranny available for your truck can be had for probably $1,000 if you want to do some work. Adavance Adapters sells a kit to put a 700R4 behind a 4.0. It can be made to work with yours. You need a 60-degree 700R4--your tranny guy could rebuild it successfully, but I would send it to a real builder and for $1,000 you would have one that would survive behind an LTL dually pulling a 40' gooseneck 100,000miles/year. The transfer case that will come with a 60-degree 700R4 has a deeper gear and the same-side drop.

Do not expect an A4LD with all of the soft parts swapped to fix your problems. It definitely WON'T!

Its at Placerville Transmission

There going to do a full rebuild pull it out and re-install it. It servived 175K plus going through a driveshaft viberation to Las Vegas 800miles it vibrated the tailshaft housing loose. This owner of Placerville trans he does 4x4 transmissions and has dealed with these type before. I found on top of the valve body rear planetarie pices

I did the A4LD thing twice and ended up changing over to manual. Going to manual was the best move I ever made.

2500 is a steep price to pay for a temporary fix to an 88 Ranger. I only say that because it will break again no matter who rebuilds it and you will be disappointed. If I was paying that much for it I would atleast demand an 80,000 mile warranty in writing stating that they would repair anything related to the transmission free of charge no matter what damage occurs and that they will cover towing costs from the point where you broke down back to their shop. If they agree to that then they've either developed some magical way to make an A4LD last forever or they are going to secretly install a manual transmission and hire little gnomes to operate the clutch and shifter without you knowing.

This guy is a genius. Please put a stick in it. It makes it a way better vehicle.

You can order in a rebuilt/reman transmission for almost a grand less. The only catch? You'll have to swing the install yourself and send the old one back for the core charge.

A4LD's have a bit of an earned bad rap. But if you take care of it and keep it cool? They do last a bit. Except if you are doing a lot of hauling..that seems to be a death blow for 'em.

Bunch of drama queens in here. He said the original lasted 175k. My A4LD has 154k and still shifts beautifully. The point is, they CAN last a long time. And there is no reason a properly rebuilt one can't last just as long. It sounds like this shop knows what they're doing and will rebuild it right. Should be good for another 150k.

my 1st a4ld lasted for 175k miles and the rebuild lasted 20k. second truck the a4ld lasted 168k and the rebuild lasted for 15k. had it rebuilt with the only thing reused was the case and it lasted for 28k and i got mad and did a 5speed swap.

Thanks Guys

I appreciate all the help and input its at the shop $1685.00 he estimated the repair cost. They will pull it out rebuild it and re-install it the little truck is like new real clean 4x4 I guess its better to fix it at this point. I would have pulled it out but doing it alone I might smash my head and I need the truck back on line soon
