hey all, I need a second opinion. So for the past few times I've started my truck, its had a little trouble. The solenoid would click repeatedly but nothin. then it would miraculously start on x attempt. well tonight, it decided it was done :annoyed:, the battery seemed to be losing power each time i tried, and now i'm pretty sure the battery just died. Is it as I suspect and its just a dead battery? or is the solenoid bad too?:icon_confused: the weird thing is that I just replaced the solenoid a few months ago. So I don't think that the solenoid is the problem. any help / advice is greatly appreciated.

the fender wall starter relay should be good. if its clicking then the brushes might be bad, bang on the starter with a hammer and if it tries to start then you know you need to replace the starter.

mine acts up the same way after i go mudding.

well, I talked to a mechanic friend of mine, he corrected my thinking of where the starter motor was and confirmed that it is the part that is broken. He said that the motor probably has rounded off its teeth on the gear. any tips on removing the starter motor?

Nothing in your description of the symptoms points to worn starter gear teeth. It does indicate bad battery or bad starter or bad starter/battery connections.

well we connected the terminals on the starter relay to bypass it. He told me that if we tried to start the truck then, it shouldn't make any sound because the charge wouldn't be strong enough to turn the starter motor. but the starter kept making the really loud clicking sound. Also, a start or two before it died, the truck sounded almost like it was flooded when it was trying to start. It didn't click yet, but it sounded kinda like a lawnmower when you pull the chord and it doesn't quite start. If it is just connections, where all should I check?

Disconnect the battery post connections and clean the battery posts, disconnect the stater wires and clean the contacts. You can also just remove the starter and check the starter gear and take it to a parts store for bench testing.

ok its all fixed. It turns out that the brushes in the started were bad. So I replaced it. thanks for the advise all.
