soo i ajusted my idle screw on my carb and it idles nice around 900 but then i drive to town and it wants to idle at like 1500 to 2000!!!:icon_confused: is this a sticking cable or something to do with the carb or maybe the air idk its got me confused lol

I suppose it could be the cable just pop it off and see if the throttle closes. is the choke butterfly all the way open on the top of the carb. when you say you adjusted the idle screw are you talking the idle motor that opens the throttle with the 4 wire plug in. the idle is controlled by the computer if you have the emissions still in it and idles around 700-800 start the motor have someone turn it off while you watch the plunger coming out the motor on the side of the carb does it fully extend. if it does unplug it then start the motor this is your curb idle adjust it until you get about 8 to 900 rpm then plug the motor back in the idle should drop if it dont make sure the choke is all the way open. the plug in on the air cleaner can also make it act funny is it plugged in it tells the computer the intake air temp and the plug on the thermostat housing is the water temp sensor for the computer they all work together and the vacuum that goes to the air cleaner controls the air door on the filter housing plug it in to manifold vacuum and make sure it is working it brings hot air to the sensor from the exhaust manifold make sure all the vacuum lines are where they belong check all the electrical connections are clean and plugged in while your doing that disconnect the neg terminal on the battery for about 15 mins to erase the codes and hard values ther should be a vacuum diagram by the radiator and kinna a bitch to follow make sure they are where they belong

there is a screw on the back side of the carb connected to the throttle cable it just stop it like how u would rev it under hood u can screw it in more to make it idle higher or all the way out to make it idle slower. ill post a pic of it and ill have to wait till tomorrow to check that stuff cuz its raining again.. thanks

yea a pic would help but I believe if you screw it all the way out does the idle motor take over the throttle its on the right side front of the carb with a plunger that pushes on the throttle lever where the cable connects. It just sounds like the computer is confused on what it needs to do from the throttle position sensor. Is the computer hooked up and working first off

If you dont want the computer set-up, do the duraspark set-up.

idk thats kinda alot of work for an old motor id do it if i was gonna rebuild it but im prolly gonna keep it and buy a 93+ ranger with lower miles then put a 289 in it or 302 im gonna try and see why its idling so high right now tho i might just be sticking cable

well the idle screw the stops the throttle was screwed in too much and i had a vac. line off that goes to the air cleaner so now it idles fine im gonna put a nut on the idle ajusting screw to keep it from moving should stay in place then

did you try unscrewind the idle screw all the way out so the computer controls the idle

no then it would be really low im not sure if its even working lol it seems to be running fine like i have it soo all i gotta do it put a nut on that screw to keep it there and should be mint. also do u kno what goes to this looks like a missing hose or vac. line and i cant find any lines disconnected?

thats lil tube with a lip on it coming off the carb is what im talking about. and i had some things diconnected when i took this there all back on now like that black line with orange on it i put it back on

thats where you put the egr bleed line it comes from the 5th solenoid and a filter is supposed to go on the top if you look at the vacuum diagram by the radiator it is the solenoid on the top left it relieves the vacuum from the egr to allow it to close when the computer tells it to the tech library has a vacuum diagram I just checked under my hood it is the orange vacuum line if you can still tell the colors

the filter is supposed to be inside the air filter the bleed vacuum tube will get clogged and hold the egr open if it is not at least plugged into the carb
