Sup guys, well the story: My cousin has a 94 2wd Ranger that had a 3.0 once.
He took the engine out and swapped in a diesel one from a Mitsubishi truck.

When he took it for a test drive the truck ended up being super slow and gutless. I told him to check on the gear ratio, He did and he found out that it has 3.45 gears.
Then i offered him the 3.73 ring and pinion i took off from my 7.5"(he did the gear swap to 4.10 on my truck).
He calls me today to ask if i knew if Ford did a different carrier for the 3.45 gears. He cant manage to make the crosspin to get into position.

What can be done in this case?

Is a ring gear tooth in the way? Might have to file a little off of the ring gear tooth where it interferes. It should only be the inside of the tooth where it does not contact the pinion gear anyway.

3.43 and up use a notched crosspin, you can just grind a bit off the gear tooth to get it to clear though and it won't affect performance of the gear set.

It's actually 3.73 and up, 3.45s aren't an issue. I do agree with grinding the tooth that's in the way.

Use the stock cross pin, and grind a bit off the ring gear tooth, it will affect nothing. You can use a STOCK cross pin all the way up through 4.88s. Notched cross pins are NOTORIOUS for breaking, plus then he'd have to spend money on it.

3.73 is what I meant, fat fingers messed it up...:icon_rofl:

Thanks for the answers. But he doesnt want to grind the tooth, so he installed the 3.45 gears back.

The inner edge of the tooth shouldn't contact any part of the pinion gear if the gears are properly set up. You're only taking at most 1/16" off of the very inside end of the tooth (1/8 to 3/16")

Yeah. i told him to grind it up a but to make the pin work, but he said he wont mess it up.
his loss lol
