Is this the rev limiter?

(This is a 2004 Ranger XLT 4X4, 4.0)

If I have the engine running and the truck in park, and rev up the engine, it gets to 3000 rpm and suddenly surges much like a rev limiter will do. Is this in fact the rev limiter and if not, do I have some sort of issue going on? Other than that, it runs fine...does not do it when the truck is in motion.

Yep - that's the rev limiter - 3000 in Neutral or Park - around 6500 in gear

Out of curiosity when did they start putting these in, my buddy has a 2000 ranger and his doesn't have one..

My 2001 did. Only on the auto's though. You can rev the hell out of the manuals.

i know its not a ranger. but my 98 contour does same thing with a 2.o and auto trans and yes i have a ranger

HUH? the truck is a ranger. 4.0 OHV. Auto. No rev limiter.

my 07 and 96 both have rev limiters, i'll sit in neutral (both are manual) and rev them up pretty high, i've only been able to get my 96 to go to 5500 before the tach starts to bounce, but my 07 can do 6500 before the needle starts to bounce.

My manual 06 will go around 6250 and when I hit the rev limiter it basically shut down the throttle until it reached lower rpm around 2000 to 3000. Only did this once and it scared the shit outta me. haha
