Is this the fuel pump?

I am still trying to get my ranger running, just picked up a new battery for it so cranking power is good. When I turn the key to run position (not starting) I hear the in tank pump for about 3 seconds, which is normal. I have 1/2 tank of fresh gas. I am not getting fuel up top, nothing coming out of the bleeder valve on the rail. I found the external fuel pump which I think is the problem, I don't hear it turn on either. I have a hole in the floor above it so it definately is not turning on. Would it go bad from sitting? Also, where is the fuel filter on this truck?
 
I'm not too knowledgeable but I'll try to help until someone with more knowledge helps you. I'm assuming it's the truck under your avatar. IIRC, The fuel filter is ahead of the second pump in the frame behind a metal plate, just before the frame starts bending up. Release the pressure at the fuel rail and remove the filter. If the filter is the problem, you should see signs of gas.
Another idea; if you have dual tanks, your switch may not be working, and you may be trying to pump from a tank with no fuel?
Check your electrical connections.

I am going to check the fuel filter, all I hear is the in tank pump though. So I am thinking the in line pump is bad too.
 
Definitely need both of those pumps running. Check to see if its getting power before you go out and get a new pump.

There is an accumulator just before the inline pump but the actual fuel filter is just past it. It goes up an angle along the frame just beside the engine.

Tomorrow I am gonna work on it again, I went to the junkyard today and got a good booster and master cylinder, so the brakes are tackled, just have to install and bleed the system. I am gonna check the fuel problem too, is the thing inside the frame under the cab the fuel pump? It has the metal cover, and I assume the fuel filter is ahead of that near the front axle area.

Thats it! Thats the High Pressure Pump. Filter is just ahead. Just follow those lines.
 
I installed the new booster and master cylinder. I guess the Bronco II booster is a bit larger as I had to bend the brake lines out an inch on each to reach the master cylinder connections. Everything went good though, bled the rear brakes only and the pedal is perfect. I also pulled the fuel pump off and brought it home with me. Looks really rough. I am gonna hook it up to a battery and see if I can get is unstuck or to work. I had fuel up to the pump, but not in front of it, so it definately was the in line pump. Also, there is a wire coming off the harness under the hood under the booster area that is not plugged into anything. It is a green wire, does not look like anything ever was plugged in to it, and I could not find a wire anywhere, is it an accessory I don't have?
 
I also don't have a fuel filter ahead of the in line pump, there is just a cartridge one before the in line pump in the worst location possible. It is in the frame right next to the transfer case...But I am getting fuel so I will wait to change that when the truck is on a lift.
 
STOP! the canister before the in line pump is not a filter, it is an accumulator that collects returning fuel and helps feed the in line pump. If you take it out (pain in the a$$) the canister can not be unscrewed without destroying the o-ring and it is almost impossible to screw it back on. Best not to mess with it, it is basically maintenance free. You should have a pretty big round canister fuel filter after the inline fuel pump (between pump and regulator) and it mounts with a large hose clamp to a mount between the frame rail near ext. manifold collector (under brake booster and steering shaft) If you dont have one there you might find that someone repaired or connected the fuel line there. you will want to put a filter there. As far as the green wire I have the same one doing nothing also (also a few other dead end wires) must be for testing or other accessory's.
 
Good thing I did not bother with it then lol, ahead of the in line fuel pump, there is only the 2 fuel lines, Is blue line factory? Maybe it was repaired because I followed all the way up to the intake and nothing.
 
He's right about that canister. If you have gas to the pump then we know what the issue is. If it does become a problem, I THINK you can buy them as an assy.

There really should be an inline filter. If not, Maybe for some reason, someone just ran a whole new line off of the pump up to the rail..In between that should be a filter. Basically it would be on the same line going into the "front" of the fuel pressure regulator.

If it's not there, you may have to get a new line. I dont know if its sold as a kit (2 lines) or not but you need one that leaves the pump and has a squarish coupler for the inlet of the filter and the clips. Then another line the same squarish end that runs from the outlet of the filter to the FPR.

BTW, my lines are blue and one is tan. I believe the tan one is return...Don't quote me though, Its from memory :D

I am glad you didnt bother with it to lol. The stock fuel lines are a HARD plastic fuel line (blue-intake 5/16in, tan-return 3/8in) You can cut the blue fuel line at the filters mounting area and buy 2 stock plastic fuel line connectors witch have a plastic retaining clip on one side and barbed ends on the other side (any good parts store should have them) then use a punch that is a little bigger than the inside of the fuel line to pry open the cut ends so you can push in the barbed ends of the fuel line connectors (no hose clamps needed, the fuel line will close back up) then put a stock fuel filter between the new connectors. If look inside the frame rail (around the starter and ext. manifold) you should see a concave metal mount that the filter body sets against, a large hose clamp can go up through the mount (runs up under the backside of mount and out the top) and wraps around the filter body. Tighten up the hose clamp so it is holding the filter against the mount. Make sure the blue intake line goes to the fuel rail and not to the regulator (tan return line). good luck.
 
I got it running today!!!!! I installed the new in line pump, turned the key and heard the great sound of a fuel pump! First crank nothing(air in line), second crank almost started, third crank fired right up. Boy did it smoke ALOT. But it has not run in 7 years and it was like 30 degrees out. Idled smooth, good oil pressure, alternator charged, all was well. Tomorrow I am gonna pull it out of the spot it has been in for 7 years. There is alot of goop and acorns all over the top of the engine so it smoked a bit, I'll clean that off tomorrow. I looked at the lines while under changing the pump, the main line is blue, the return is tan. So it seems to be factory. I am gonna take a better look at some other things tomorrow. All this hard work in the cold payed off.
 
Awesome! Change that oil soon though before running it too much. I'm really glad to hear you go that thing going.

So...What's next :D
