Is this supposed to be loose?

I have a 1991 ford ranger ext cab 2wd with the A4LD tranny. I took off my drive line to replace the u-joints and carrier to fix a vibration problem and when I did, I noticed that the splined shaft in the transmission that the drive line slides onto moves a little bit. Not a lot, but probably a quarter inch or more. I didn't think much of it and put the drive line back on, but the vibration is still there. I just picked up a one piece from a 99 ranger today to rule out any drive line problems, but now it's bothering me, should that splined shaft in the tranny be loose? Does the drive line yoke hold it tight? Can anyone give me some input here? Thanks!
