I have a 95 Ranger, its super cab 4.0 4x4 manual. Is it possible that the truck came with 3.27's? Everything looks original, and with 31's it does run pretty low rpm on the freeway.

Yes it's very possible and yes Ford needs a swift kick in the balls for ever doing something so stupid. You shouldn't even be using OD with that gear/tire combo, ever..

It is still surprisingly peppy for being geared so high. It runs like 1800 rpm at 65 mph in 5th.

I personally don't think you do have 3.27's.

I run 1900@55 in 5th with 4.10's and 235/75-15's

calculating for the different tire size and gear ratio
I'd guess you have 3.73's

I have 235/75-15's and 3.73's and I am at ~2400rpm at 65 in 5th gear... 55 in 4th at ~2500rpm...

mine says it has 3.55's but sits at 3000 in 5th at 55mph... so I imagine it must have been swapped...

The reason I was wondering, is because the tag on the rear diff says 3.27, and I am positive that is what it says. I took it off and cleaned it up with a wire brush the numbers are plain as day. I am just trying to figure out if it really has 3.27's. If someone did indeed swap them, then the front has also been swapped because the truck drives fine in 4 wheel it doesnt fight its self even on pavment.

Will the ratio be stamped on the gears? I really want to know because I plan to swap in a 31 spline rear and I don't want to regear the front right away. I would like to swap a 31 spline with the same gears, but if it does indeed have 3.27's then I wont be able to run 33's without regearing anyway. I think I will be pushing my luck if I run 33's with the 3.73's.

I'm pretty sure you have 3.27's... That sounds about right... I think 3.27's and 33's would bring the suck... I just put slightly shorter tires (~28" vs~30") on my Explorer with 3.73's and I love it even more now, lol...

Yes it's a good chance of it being 3.27. Hey you guys that post up your speed and RPM numbers. It really doesn't mean anything because of the different speedo gear ratios.

Why would you even say that?

Just for reference i'm at 2100 RPM@65 Mph (5th). I've got 4.10's and 33" tires.

It really means Jack.

The only numbers that should be of significance are that your RPM is around 2000-2500 @ 65 MPH.

MY speedo is CORRECTLY calibrated I aven't the foggiest f'ing
clue about the accuracy of YOURS.

Ditto for my Tach

However none of this prevents me from transposing the numbers for a correction factor when pumping numbers into my scientific calculator:icon_twisted:

with 31's and 3.27's that is about the rpm he'd be doing at that speed.
allowing for typical 1-2mph speedo error and a typical 50rpm tach error.

with 3.27's and 31's he should be doing all of 1720rpm@65mph

So I have to assume there's SOME error... somewhere...

Okay, thanks for the input. Atleast now I can assume that my truck does indeed have 3.27's.

while on the topic, whats the rev limit on the 4.0? I think my tach is off a bit, and the gas gage doesn't work, but a few things are hacked on this thing... runs good other than the slight ping at full grunt... I'll pull off the rear diff cover in the near future to figure things out...
