Ooops...posted in wrong thread...so I had to go read the article...

I think that means we've reached the blithering idiot level if we can only get 200,000 miles out of a vehicle. My last ranger had almost 300,000 miles (440,000 km) but it did have some reconstructive measures taken over 14 years...

I think it stems from parents pushing their children to get a higher education and completely abandoning the thought process of being able to fend for one's self. If the kid spends all their life learning to work with their brain then they lack the once common knowledge skills of swinging hammers, turning wrenches or even socializing verbally instead of technologically.

Oh I don't know, I think each person has their own area of interest so may not care about what makes a vehicle work or why it doesn't.
Just gets a new one when current one gets too many miles, which is good for us used car buyers, lol.

I like a good steak, but really don't care to learn how to slaughter a steer and carve it up, just want the results

Both parts and labor costs looked outrageous to me. Perhaps my ancient and fossilized brain hasn't kept up with the times. Took a truck in for an alignment once and the wife's truck in for a diagnostic check before getting a code reader.

My creaky old bones can still manage to crawl my way back up from the floor and my hands can still operate a wrench.

Also consider the targeted readership. The article is from MSN, a liberal leaning outlet to be sure, and the average liberal probably has far more interest in putting soy in their coffee than understanding what that squealing, grinding, noise is when they hit the brakes.

Fact of the matter is... if you have to ask about a lot of that stuff you probably ain't going to fair well fixing it on your own.

And as far as DIY goes, some of that stuff isn't really doable even on your own. Like a heater core on a new rig needs the entire dash pretty much removed. I have done entire powertrain swaps but I dread that with my dd... is a weekend going to be enough for a first timer that has to drive it to work on Monday? It won't fit in the garage so I would have to get it lined up with a nice weekend or a weekend when we are slow at work...

I am sure it pays like 3-4 hours to have it professionally done... but I am no professional.

My Ranger is different, if it takes me awhile to figure out how to do something it is no big deal. The whole thing is like a very entertaining puzzle.

And it is two clamps and like 5 screws to change the heater core... which is how it should be.

I see this a lot in the RV industry. The manufacture shows it takes a half hour to do a certain job like replacing a cabinet door. However, when the new door comes in it has no hardware and now we have to remove the hardware off the old door and install on new door and sometimes even replace the mirror or decorative insert. So they don't see the additional labor involved in the job, they just see the job at hand. Warranty work does not pay like it should and people just don't get that.
