a guy at work offered me the engine/trans/tcase out of his early bronco

302, no intake (he's keeping the FI stuff he had on it).
np435 trans
dana 20 t-case

all in real good shape. $700 for the whole deal, but he said "money talks"

not sure what (if any) accessories are on the motor (alt, water pump, ps pump, etc....)

my biggest concern is getting the clutch to work in my 84 b2 4 speed, but i'll search for awhile before i really start asking questions.

so, sound like a deal?

offer him 500 and if he takes it then go for it .. i know someone right now selling a late 80's bronco frame for 500 only thing missing is body

imo... good deal, i dont think the 435 ever came with a dana20, so that means it has an aftermarket adapter. as for the clutch, i used a bellhousing from a mid-80's ford truck, bolted to my 5.0 and used an external mounted hydraulic slave cyl, i pulled the hose retainer pin on my master cyl inserted the hose from the slave cyl. and bled the system... done!

thats good to know. i'll ask him today what type of bellhousing it has.

so let make sure i got this right. np435 has a clutch activated by a cable. the external hyd. slave (what can i pull this off of) uses hydraulic pressure to pull the cable. so i can keep it stock 84 b2 from the petal to the clutch master cyl?

Thanks!

if you've got an extra $1000 to get it streetable, it's pretty close to a good deal (how much leaves & rainwater are in the intake....that could lower the offer a good bit):icon_thumby:

yeah, i could probably handle that. i can re-coup some of the cost by selling off as much of my 2.8 stuff as possible (edelbrock headers, DS dist., cam, holley 350 2 barrel, etc....).

also, i like the cost of making engine swap plates instead of getting new mounts. so that should help shave a little cost too.

i have an old ford junkyard available, so i would like to use as many junkyard parts as possible.

just gathering my thoughts (if i put this on paper, i'll just lose it, haha):

-motor mounts: flat plate, 1/4"
-intake/carb: junkyard. 2 or 4 barrel, dont matter to me. open to suggestions

-exhaust manifolds: open to suggestions here. whats a good junkyard find?
-exhaust: local shop can bend what i need, i have mufflers

-radiator: open to suggestions here. whats a good junkyard find?
-fan: i have 2 smaller electrics that work, pulled from some foreign car
-core support: cut-n-weld, i need to take it off anyway for rust repair

-trans mount: i assume some box steel and some plate will work.

-driveshafts: easy part, not gonna worry with it right now.

-firewall clearance: i'll cut off whatever gets in my way, and weld in new
-heater box: f- it, don't use it anyway. worry about that later

more to come...........

if you are going to use this setup for a trail truck, a 2 bbl carb will work just great. Edelbrock 289 Performer with a small (600 cfm) 4 bbl carbs are cheap and plentiful on ebay.
If you can find a Maverick or Comet with a 302, the exhaust manifolds a pure gold for this swap.
The rad is easy. 91-94 Explorer with automatic trans.
For the fans, those small e fans will likely work, but I'm partial to a mechanical. There's no reason for a motor to fry because of an electrical gremlin.
The core support is easy too. LMC Truck is your friend. Alternately, you could do what I did and hand fab on out of sheet metal (I had some stainless lying around :) )
Trans mount is an easy one too. You can use yours if you move it back a little.
If you can save the heater box, do it. Keep that windshield unfogged. With a 302 under the hood you really need to keep an eye on the road, trail, whatever...

Good luck, Tony. It's a good deal. Buy the stuff!

since the trans has a dana 20 i am guessing it came from an early bronco which had a rod type clutch linkage (no cable involved). and the bellhousing i am talking about doesnt have a cable... the clutch release fork comes out the side, the slave cyl mounts to a bracket on the outside and pushes directly on the end of the release rod sticking out.

oh and yeah, the stock master cyl & pedal assembly remains unmodified. i can take some pics of mine if it would help.

Whenever I hear that expression from a guy selling stuff, I ALWAYS walk quickly away. And never regretted it.

true... one mans diamond is another mans turd!

thanks for the advice everyone :headbang:

not very worried about getting ripped off. "the guy" is my boss's boss. honest man, and i trust him :icon_thumby:

i'm a picture person, seeing it is so much easier. try explaining how to tie a shoe with only words :D

i happen to know a guy with a few comets :icon_thumby:

yeah, mechanical fan would be best....

i also really like the idea of using the original trans mount. its an 84 with a 4 speed stick if that makes a difference

heat can be supplied by a 12v heater.

oh yeah, its not a "J" shift dana 20, its the other one. and this was all pulled out of an early bronco recently for a stroker motor hooked to a c-6. he's gonna take some pics of how it sits now, probably monday. if i like what i see, i'll go look in person with some cash, just in case.

ok, just talked with him a little more. its an older block, probably around a 78. he is keeping all the front mount accessories for his new motor (alt, ps pump, etc...). he said he would keep the dist if it will fit his 351W (what he is building now), but i dont think it will. so i can include that in the package.
