Does anyone know if there is a DVR made that you can use with a tv that doesn't have cable tv? Our VCR's sound isn't recording to good anymore and figured with the digital switch coming a DVR would be better. And pretty much all the shows I record get recorded over anyway. thanks.

I think that's his question, does Tivo work without a cable broadcast?

Or, buy a vcr off someone who upgraded to a DVR, I'd send ya mine but shipping would probably be more than it's worth...

if you get a TV capture card for your computer you can run the antenna into the card and record it on your hard drive, then using something like an XBOX360 and a LAN you can watch it from the computer on your TV.

So, is that computer mod the only way you can digitally record non cable tv? In other words there is no actual DVR for non cable tv?

I'd head down to my local electronics retailer if I was you. There's gotta be something simpler out there for you.

maybe not the only way, but that's the way I would do it, cause it's probably the cheapest...or it will be for a couple more weeks anyway. Once they make the transition to all digital and the analog signals stop, you'll have to have a capture card with a digital tuner, and those run a bit higher. Still might be cheaper than whatever standalone options there are, it'd be worth some research.

thanks for the replys, not exactly what i wanted to here but thanks non the less.

I don't know much :icon_twisted: .
IMO I do not think could be done w/ OTA analog signals w/ a digital device (DVR). Maybe w/ that new OTA digital converter box. (?)

Could dust off the VCR. :shok:

Does anyone have a digital vcr? I seen a few on ebay and was wondering if they have the .1 .2 etc channels. So i could record like 3 different channels on the same day and not have to manually switch the channels like a converter box makes you do. and does anyone know if i can hook a digital tv up to a vcr to record? i have one but it doesn't record what's on the digital tv, i can watch what's already recorded though.

It could. If a pc can do it so could a DVR. it just converts the analog signal to a digital recording.

my PVR accepts regular RCA or composite inputs, you just can't record more than one thing at once

it does to remote scheduling though

thanks mjonesjr that's exactly what i was hoping i could find. A bit pricey but at least there something out there that will work. I'll shop around and see what kind of price i can find. I do wish i wouldn't have waited to the last second to try to figure this out. thanks again for the link.
