I had my trans rebuilt in August the other day it started leaking from the hoses underneath the trans-cooler would the transmission shop have to replace them under warranty? The tried to tell me that the didnt me around the trans cooler so it doesnt. i was going to take it to them but it would take a day or two before they could get to it so i took it to another shop and they want $100 to replace the hoses is that reasonable?

Was the trans cooler replaced/rebuilt in the rebuild? if not, I would say no, they are not liable. I personally would have had them replace the hoses during the rebuild. If you're gonna spend the money, spend a little extra to not worry about these things.

$100 bucks sounds pretty good actually if that includes the labor. If it is only going to cost ~$100 to get it fixed and you don't have to turn a wrench on it, go for it.

Just my $.02

In my opinion if they didnt touch them they are not liable (espechially if it is a hose) sorta like if you had a remanufactured motor put in, you took it home and months latter the battery dies are they liable, they obviously took the battery cable off should they warranty your battery, you know the remaned motor covers just the motor? If they had caused the damage, and Id think they didnt cause they probally pulled them at the tranny and left the cool side attached, then they would be liable.

if they didnt replace the cooler then that is a tranny shop i would never go to , standard practice when doing a rebuild it to replace the cooler if it is radiator mounted with an external mout , or at least flush it and add an aux. cooler , every rebuild we did on a customers car at college got a flush and a new aux. cooler. Our teacher told us about a time at a Benz dealership he was at where the Tech forgot to mark on the invoice that he did a Flush during the Warranty Tranny Rebuild and he lost all the pay he made on that job because Mercedes would not reimburse the dealership.

so in short , i would ask them if they flushed the cooler , and if they did then they had the hoses off and they should replace them under warranty , if they didnt flus it , then tell them that they just lost you and anyone you know that needs tranny work as customers.

Say they did remove them, flush, and install the old ones if they did no damage to them, I still dont feel they are responsible. I mean if I bring you a vehicle for a motor rebuild, all assecories had to be taken off so now you will warranty all my parts for 5 months and replace any of them out of your pocket? Oh and you took the motor apart from the tranny can you warranty that too? Maybe I just dont expect as much as I should but if I didnt pay for new parts and they did not cause the problem I just couldn't feel right about demanding they replace my parts at no cost to me.

the purpose of replacing and/or flushing the cooler is to prevent returns under warranty , when a tranny has a failure and a decent tranny shop does the rebuild , the factor the cost of a new cooler into the price of the job. the point of doing this is the fact that metal shavings and dirty fluid and dirt can be stuck in the cooler ( you cannot clean them completely , no matter what anyone tells you ) and then can be back in the circulation of the fluid and can cause another failure.

The best Tranny shop in my area has never had a tranny they rebuilt fail , because they warranty it for 3 years / 36,000 miles , install an Auxiliary Cooler , an inline Filter , and require that you come bac within 1500 mile of the rebuild to have the inline filter changed , otherwise it voids the warranty. They have been doing this practice for 30 years and are usually booked for work 2 - 3 weeks in advance. And the cost of all the auxiliary parts are included in the price they quote you for the job.

I understand that, sorta like having an ac compressor failure, you have to make sure you have to get all debris out. The part I disagree on and that I was trying to say was simply if the old cooler lines were removed, not damaged, and installed correctly that I cannot see where it is a warranty issue. Cooler lines are his. If you work on a vehicle do not cause the damage, installed them correctly and they fail months latter, would you pull out your wallet and hand the customer the money for replacement parts that they never paid for? Would you take responsibility for any of the parts on that vehicle, that were not new 5 months latter? Old stuff can fail. If the guy is giving him a warranty on his work and the new parts what else can you do, maybe they got some signals crossed and the op wanted it done right garage thought he wanted it done as cost effective as possible. Not tryng to arguee but he cant call Napa or whoever and say I got a customer who did not pay for new lines, he needs em I will take one of your free ones since I bought the parts for the repairs the customer and me had agreed upon.

ok , i see where you are coming from now , if they installed them correctly and there was not even a minor leak noticed from day one , one that could have turned major , such as a pinhole in the line turning into a hole , then no , i wouldnt expect them to replace , but i am the type that documents everything , if i notice fluid on the ground the day after it get fixed , i doucument , and immediatley go back , but this does not seem to be the case here , so i fully agree with your way of thinking
