more ranger or f-150 like?

I didn't want to join an Explorer Forum to ask just a couple questions, anyway... Don't mean to sound like a troll LOL

Lately I've been thinking that I'll get a project truck for the 98 transmission and engine I have in storage rather than work on the truck I have now. There are manual transmission four-wheel drive explorers out there (not many.)
I don't really need a "truck" although a suv-type would still be handy for my wooden canoe building & restoration activities.

Until 2010 they were more Ranger like. In 2012 it was redesigned and became it's own thing. Not really Ranger or F150 like from 2011 on.

The Expedition was the one that was similar to the F150.

Thanks Josh, 97.. sport. 4wd manual. It would have the the 4.0 ?

Yup.

91-01 are a lot like an Ranger. 02-10 they deviated quite a bit and 11’+ they are a fwd based platform.

It would also be more compatible for a 98 engine because of the crankshaft position sensor, egr etc?

I don't want to waste everybody's time, it is a long shot but nothing ventured nothing gained

Your best bet would be a 97-00. However, after 95 im not sure a 4dr 4wd with a manual was offered.

Is your motor an OHV 4.0 or SOHC 4.0?

it's 98 4.0, I don't want anything to do with sohc. Why I'm not looking into 2000 and after

Well, the Explorer in 97+ could be had with either the OHC or the OHV in a 4.0, be careful and make sure.

Yes that's a possibility isn't it. Good reminder thank you!

Ah! The VIN has an X for the engine which should be the ohv the sohc was an option if I'm reading the information correctly

Right. In 97 ohv was the base Explorer engine, OHC was the upgraded "middle" engine, and the 5.0 was the premium, usually coming with full time AWD.

I may be onto something, trouble is Vehicles disappear as quickly as they're posted on Craigslist and other places!

They made the manual into the first year of the new generation, 2002.

Much more common in the Spots though than a 4dr.

Apparently explorers with manual transmissions are pretty rare even from the years that they are actually produced either there weren't that many or people are not giving them up! LOL thanks for all the advice everyone! I don't know this will pan if at all, will find out tomorrow (Monday 3/5)

It's a matter of when not if the automatic transmission finally goes, and I have a 98 engine transmission and transfer case with 62,000 miles on them in storage.
