Is the 94 3.0L 5 speed the same as the 4.0L 5 speed?

Wikipedia only lists the M5OD-R1 for all 5 speeds of that generation, so are they the same regardless of engine? There's a guy on craigslist selling a whole 94 Ranger for $300, but it has a 3.0L. Could I use the transmission from that truck for my 4.0L engine?

It's "The same" transmission, but there are differences... like for instance the bellhousing is cast integral with the tranmission case and a 4.0 and 3.0 don't have the same bellhousing.

And the 4.0 uses different internal gears to make the ratios closer together on 1st, 2nd & 3rd...

Alright, ty. Was hoping I could get it for the transmission then make my money back parting it out, but if it the transmission won't work, not worth the time.

Well, you could swap the internal parts from a 4.0 transmission
into your 3.0 case, but only if you swap them as a complete set of parts.

the only significant issue would be a slightly taller 1st gear ratio
(3.40:1 for the 4.0, Vs the 3.72:1 you have now)

But you also get a tighter spacing between 3rd and 4th
(1.31:1 for the 4.0, 1.50:1 for the 3.0)
