Is my transmission dead?

well the misaligned gear is probably from the brass thrust surface worn down.. you can see the gold color in the picture.

and the only way to tell if the rest of it is worth fixing is to take the output shaft apart and see if the seized bearing damaged the shaft.

Well this is the part where im probably going to half to cry uncle and go find a transmission shop. I dont really have the time or money between school, work, and the approaching winter.

But thanks a billion, especially brutus you were definitely a huge help

You can take it apart and see what is going on. I love gearboxes they fasinate me and alot of fun to figure out. If you have the time yea see if it is worth repairing a good parts diagram helps and a big bench to lay the parts out on as you take it apart the problem will slap you in the face when you dig in it and the correct diagram with part numbers to find out availability and cost. A good vernier caliper and feeler guage set to measure tolerances you can do it if you have the specs and patience.

i would skip the tranny shop and get a junkyard transmission.

my bet is that the output shaft AND 3rd gear are chewed up and they'll want you to buy new gears, bearings, and an output shaft.

a junkyard trans would be a fraction of the cost and you'd be back on the road

I just talked to the guys here at the shop in town and they said they figured roughly 300-500 bucks. The cheapest junk yard tranny I could find anywhere was 650 bucks. That being said I found a guy with a tranny out of a 95 or 96 ranger which is a 4.0L 4x4 for 200 bucks. I've heard that only an 88-94 will work or have I heard wrong? What is it that makes the 95-96 no good?
