I got a 94 4x4 ranger with the M50D-R1 trans to beat around in for winter and I must say i've come to love this truck. So here's the issue I was driving it the other day when I come to a light shifted it to first and let out the clutch to find that it doesn't want to move. So my first thought is must hit the wrong gear so I shift to neutral and back into first and try again. No cigar, eventually i came to realize that it was stuck in third and I made it home. At this point I was thinking shifter linkage or something like that but after further examination I found that the shifter basically drops right in the top.

So its M5OD-R1 5-speed and its stuck in third gear, how would one go about fixing it and would it be worth it?

take the shifter off by removing the 3 torx screws and check that your shift gates are all centered in neutral.

if they are ok then you'll need to remove the transmission and pull the top cover off and find the problem

i've got the shifter off and all the gates are in neutral, i can even shift it into gear however it seems like when i do that its in the gear i shift to such as reverse and third gear, two gear at once. So anybody know what to look for when i drop the transmission? had this issue before?

I sugggest getting a used one . new or reman is big bucks and repair of your unit is time consuming and requires good diag too. I bought a rebuild kit from an outfit called D&D for a t-5 that was very good and not too expensive-wish you luck:icon_thumby:

when you pull the top cover off you'll probably find a broken shift fork or a broken roll pin.

take pics

see if your pins is breaking or broken fork .follow the recommendation of brutus

Right will do, it'll probably be a week or two till I get around to it

Alright guys its time to revive this one and ya i know its way more than a week or two. But you know how a week or two can turn into a month or three. Anyway i got the transmission out and pulled the top cover off. Im no tranny expert, in fact I've never seen the inside of a tranny before but I played around with it for about 10mins. I dangled a magnet in the bottom of the case to see if I could fish out any metal shavings and I got absolutely nothing which surprised me because I figured with something that old there had to be something in there. I visually inspected the teeth on all the gears and the layshaft gears and they all looked good. The synchronizer rings look fine and everything looks like its in good shape. With all the collets disengaged (neutral) the input shaft spins freely turning the output shaft and everything in between. I then grabbed the collet and shifted it into first through fifth and reverse. It goes into gear a little harder than it should but anytime its in a gear the whole transmission locks completely up. It has about a 1/2 inch of play either way but otherwise doesnt turn. I cant see anything causing it either...does anybody have any clue whats wrong with this? Is it fixable or time to look for a new one?

I'll go out and snap a few pics of everything.

try to put the top cover back on and shift it now that you're sure all the collars are in neutral.

does the output shaft turn freely when all gears are in neutral?

another thing i notice is that the gears in the last pic aren't meshed right. and you have a broken switch on the top cover

Your correct that the gear isnt meshing correctly...I have no idea what could be causing that. By switch I assume your talking about the thing on the exterior of the top cover on the bottom of the pic above? That was wood puttied over with some gunk when I pulled the transmission off and there was a spring under it with wires coming out. What is that for anyway?

I attempted to put the top cover back on earlier and it still shifted very hard and I couldnt get anything but reverse and 1st to go. When all of the collars are in neutral and I turn the input shaft the output shaft also spins...which I believe means it is not disengaging the gear. I marked the output shaft and determined that it makes almost exactly .75 rotations for every full rotation of the input shaft. Another thing that might be worth mentioning is that the sychronizer ring on the 2nd gear from the left (which is third right?) is locked up and will not spin or jiggle where as all the others will spin and jiggle.

Edit: I goofed a little just realized I should have counted how much the input shaft turns when the output is given one full revolution. That comes out to about 1.30 input shaft revolutions per single output shaft revolution. According to the tech section of this site that is the exact ratio for third gear in this transmission.

i see a lot of sludge around the 3-4 shift fork on the top cover.

and since you said the synchronizer ring won't move im thinking the bearing under 3rd gear might be seized up to the output shaft.

with all the collars in neutral you should be able to turn the input shaft freely while holding the output shaft from turning.

if you put it in 1st and the trans locks up then yes there is a gear seized up.

Even with all the collars in neutral the input shaft still turns the output shaft. As I said above the input shaft turns 1.30 times for one output shaft revolution which is third gear. And the synchronizer ring around third gear is locked down tight so all this leads me to believe that most likely the bearing has seized to the shaft. Er well not most likely Im quite sure now that it has because whenever you move a collar into a gear then it becomes locked solid because two gears are now trying to turn. So thanks with the help reasoning it out guys.
Now my last question, is the transmission worth fixing seeing as how its all misaligned etc?
