I have a 98 3.0 ranger with a 5spd tranny. I have noticed over the past few months that the tranny has started to make noise and it has been getting progressively worse. The noise seems to be the worst when in 4th and 5th gears. The thing that puzzles me is that even when the truck is in neutral it makes this noise but if i push in the clutch the noise goes away. Could this just be a bearing that is going or is my tranny just completely junk. Also if it is a bearing would it be worth it to try and replace the bearing or just try and find a whole new tranny. The truck does have 180k on it with im guessing the original tranny. any info would be appreciated.

thanks
justin

the noise happening in neutral with the clutch pedal released is what's indicative of the noise being from the transmission rather than the engine or clutch.

Mine makes a speed-proportional clicking noise in 3rd, has since I put it in a year ago (mine is at least the third truck it's been in), haven't had any problems.

If you have access to a vehicle you could use if the trans went out unexpectedly, I'd just let it go until it happens. These transmissions can be bought for so cheap they almost aren't even worth rebuilding IMO.

could possibly be a throw out bearing. my rx7 used to make one hell of a noise, and i had it checked out by a thankfully honest mech, and he replaced the bearing for me. then 2 months later i was racing and blew my gear box apart. unrelated issue, shifting without clutch, but he gave me a deal on a rebuild

if it was throwout bearing noise don't you think it would be the same regardless of what gear it was in? When he said it was particularly noisy in 4th and 5th that's what indicated to me that it's probably internal to the transmission.

Mine does the same thing, There's a tsb on alldatata saying it's just a noise, nothin to be worried about

my 89 ranger does the same thing. just that mine is not that bad yet and it really loud in 5th gear. its the throw out barring going bad in it its nothing to fix just that you have to drop the tranny to do it but i would drive it untill it doesnt work anymore.

i replaced the slave cylinder/throw out bearing not to long ago and when it was going bad the last time it made a different type of grinding and also it got worse when i pushed the clutch in rather than better.
