Is my mileage normal?

Yes, you are running real rich there, unless neighbor kid is getting a gallon or two every night :)

My '94 x-cab 4.0l 4x4 with over 300,000 is running at 14-16mpg, with canopy and loaded with tools.

Pull a spark plug see if it shows a rich condition.

Is the engine running at normal temp, just below 1/2 on mine?
Running cooler sounds good but it ain't, burns more fuel and has less lubrication.
So always use the 192-195deg Ford t-stat to get that temp up fast and keep it up.

I would also clean the MAF

man I feel like you just said this... :icon_rofl:

I have a 90 ranger, 4x4 4.0ohv 5 speed, little lift with 32" tires and I'm only pulling 13 mpgs. Just for a reference lol

Ok so i stopped in at work today, talked with Mike some more. We looked into it a bit more and thought it may be my temperature sensor, so i will look into that. I got home and checked my filter... It sucked, could see nothing through it. So i ordered a k&n for it and changed the spark plugs and wires, cleaned the maf and the intake manifold. Hopefully that helps... My spark plugs were almost non existent and the wires were from the factory.. Guess the previous ownwer didnt want to take the time to do it or was cheap... Btw spark plugs on a 4.0 suck :pissedoff: had to take of my tires and pull the inner fender to get at them

Maybe get a gasket for the egr and clean it good sounds like it has been neglected for some time. Once you get it running good give it the seafoam treatment to decarb the valves, pistons and rings. Bring the engine up to normal temp and with the brake booster hose run it at a high idle and suck half a can of seafoam into the engine and quickly shut it down. Wait half an hour and then start and run it around 3000 rpms until the smoke clears out. It will probably make a huge cloud of smoke if you do it do it out in the open somewhere. It will increase compression and get the valves spinning good.

Where's the egr on a 4.0?

Where's the egr on a 4.0?

California, USA, lol

'95 and up 4.0l's all had EGRs
Before that Calif. only I think

ERG systems are actually good when they work, they allow computer to run the engine leaner at speed without pinging, so better MPG.
The perfect fuel/air mix for a gas engine generates so much heat it will melt the combustion chamber, pinging sound is the start of that :)
Exhaust gas combined with fuel/air mix helps cool the combustion chamber under load, so computer can run leaner mix.

Removing EGR gives more horse power because engine is running richer, the more fuel you burn the more power you get.
The EGR system itself doesn't take any horse power away it just lowers emissions and gives better MPG.
But if power is what you are after you wouldn't be letting a computer run things and you sure wouldn't have a stock engine, lol.

I don't have a problem with EGR's really... I just don't have one!

Running richer does not produce more power. When I dyno my race car, I can get more power running lean but the engine will not last very long at that air/fuel ratio. The pistons get too hot and can burn through.

More fuel will give you more power only if you can get more air to come with it.

Removing the EGR does little to give you more power because the engine is tuned to run with EGR. If you remove the EGR system and retune the engine, you could probably get more power.

I wish more people understood this

Sent from the road while ignoring traffic

Im getting 18MPG. And my truck came from the factory with no EGR. 3.73 gears and 31s.
