I just bought a 96 ranger 5 speed 4 cylinder 2wd truck to commute to work in.

Its always been tough to shift into second gear according to the previous owner.

It made it almost a week before it started getting tough to go into 4th as well, then on Friday on 3 occasions it wouldn't shift into any gear without forcing it.

Over the weekend, I bled the slave cylinder manually & with a vacuum pump.

I've got good clutch pressure, with no soft pedal. The clutch isn't slipping either.

I can't see any leaks on the slave cylinder or on any of the hoses from the master cylinder down.

99% of the time it will shift into any gear without any trouble if the engine is off.

I drove it to work this morning & it started shifting tough again.

Any idea's??

Thanks, Lee

internal slave leak. Same problem i had with mine bout a month ago. once everything was out, i seperated the T/O bearing from the slave, and brake fluid was all over the bottom of the bearing.

Well, it turns out that it wasn't the slave cylinder.

The clutch pressure plate was about shot, & the pilot bearing was dry.

No leaks what so ever, on the slave cylinder, master cylinder or anywhere on the hydraulic system.

Since the tranny was out, I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, slave cylinder, throughout bearing & had the flywheel resurfaced.

While trying to bleed the system, I couldn't get 100% of the air out, no matter what I did, so I had to pull the master cylinder off the firewall, & pull the line up at an angle to get all the air out of the line.

Now it shifts like new :icon_thumby:

good to hear :) its kinda sad tho....i literally have a backup slave cylinder for my ranger sitting in my garage. brand new. just incase. good to hear yours was the plate instead tho...
