On my 88 Bronco 2, that black plastic mounted canister between the gas tank and the fuel pump on the frame rail, is that a fuel filter or a suction side accumilator for the pump?

There are two fuel filters the one in the black canister and the other across from the starter in the frame rail. chances are the one in the canister has been removed and not replaced.

Louie, this fuel filter canister, you say it has a replacible filter element, so does the body spin off the inlet/outlet header or do I just replace the complete unit. And is it a Ford dealer item only, because the national auto parts stores don't list this filter.

tell them to look up an older truck (86ish) and they should be able to find it. it is replaceable but they usually have a hard time finding the part.

FWIW, The 'Zone actually had that filter, plus the "O" ring in stock for my 87 Ranger, along with the "normal" filter. I think that it was around $10, though.

Yes the lower 2/3rd of it unscrews, mine was a bear to unscrew.

Be careful though. When I was trying to replace that filter on my truck I learned (from some old Ford guys) that not all of them unscrew. Mine had one of those, and it's just a screen and the accumulator inside. the catch is that there isn't really any way to tell until you try too hard and break it. I just bought the whole assembly because it was only $25 (my price).
